Although this clip and the featured career fair are titled "Career Exploration Day", I think this is an example of career awareness. As Dr. Simonsen pointed out in her presentation this week, students in the career awareness stage learn about the world of work and a variety of careers. The Career Exploration Day featured in this clip offers high school students an opportunity to meet people who work in fields they may find interesting, including manufacturing, law enforcement, and health care, to name a few. Students also have opportunities to see and use tools of the various trades represented at Career Exploration Day so that they might get an idea of the hands-on work that accompanies these various careers. As highlighted on the Career Development Continuum from www.newwaystowork.org, career awareness activities are designed to help students gain an awareness of the careers/occupations that are available to them, as well as help them to understand the education and/or skills required for particular jobs, and to learn expectations of the workplace. By putting so many working professionals in one place for high school students to talk to, get information from, and ask questions of, I think this Career Exploration Day is a great example of a quality career awareness activity.

This clip features a teacher and student from Pflugerville High School talking about the experiences students have with the job shadow program at Pflugerville High. The teacher interviewed in this clip, Thomas Arellano, immediately points out that one of the main purposes of the job shadow program is to give students "real world experience of what a career is like", which aligns with what Dr. Simonsen said about what students learn about in the career exploration stage. She stated that students learn about job tasks, responsibilities, and environments for selected careers, which is exactly the kind of "real world experience" that Mr. Arellano refers to in this clip. Similarly, the Career Development Continuum from www.newwaystowork.org describes career exploration activities as being designed to give students hands-on experiences in a workplace related to their career interests. The student interviewed in this clip, Samantha Evans, points out that she found the job shadow experience to be beneficial because it allows students to understand what the job they are shadowing is really all about, potentially saving students time and money later on by ensuring that the career they are thinking about pursuing is truly something they are interested in. This insight corroborates the idea of career exploration, in that through hands-on work experiences students can get an idea of what the job consists of in the "real world" and whether or not they want to continue pursuing that field as a career.

This clip is an example of career preparation because, as explained on the Career Development Continuum from www.newwaystowork.org, students are "gaining work experience, education, and training" (p. 1). This clip highlights the Career Focus program in which students work on core academic skills such as budgeting, filling out job applications, and creating a resume, gain work experience in community settings as appropriate, and participate in work skills classes and career-related project-based learning within their high school. This also aligns with what Dr. Simonsen talked about in her presentation because even students who aren't necessarily going into the community are gaining skills and having experiences and training that will assist them in their selected careers. Some of the skills they are learning are what the assistant principal in this clip refers to as "soft skills", which we know many students with disabilities can find challenging. Teaching these skills in a work-related environment or mindset, such as was shown in this clip, can aid in transferring these skills to other work sites as students prepare for employment after high school.

This Webinar is a a great resource to help teach your students how to optimize their experience in a virtual career fair. I love the idea that we can use technology to help expose students in our classrooms to jobs all over the world. All employers involved in this fair are specifically seeking individuals with disabilities as employees. What a wonderful way to show our students a huge number of career opportunities available to them, without having to leave the comfort of our classrooms. In the presentations this week, it was mentioned that students in rural communities often express an interest in agriculture, likely because it is all they have been exposed to in their isolated communities. A Virtual Career Fair could be an especially useful tool to help expose students with disabilities to a variety of careers, even if they might live in an area with seemingly limited resources.

According to Dr. George Tilson, "exposure precedes interest". By Exposing these children to these careers at an early age, we are giving them the opportunity to develop an interest.
