Desde sua “virada social” (GEE, 2000), passamos a compreender que a linguagem está situada política e ideologicamente nos diferentes espaços sociais e culturais (SOARES, 2003), o que nos ajuda a entender que os sujeitos vivem imersos em práticas sociais concretas, nas quais diversas ideologias e relações de poder atuam, levando em consideração as culturas locais, as questões de identidade e as relações entre os grupos sociais. Desse modo, as práticas de letramento são produtos da cultura, da história e dos discursos (STREET, [1984] 2014) e possuem um relevante “papel na reprodução ou no questionamento das estruturas de poder e dominação” (STREET, 2003, p.88).
