A teacher’s philosophical viewpoint greatly affects how they assess a child, shaping what is assessed, how it is done, and why. For example, a humanistic or constructivist teacher may focus on individual growth, understanding, and learning processes through observations or projects. In contrast, a behaviorist or essentialist may prioritize measurable outcomes and content mastery through tests and checklists. A progressivist may use real-life tasks to assess problem-solving and critical thinking. Ultimately, philosophy guides whether assessment is used to rank, support, or prepare learners for the real world.

1. How does a philosophical viewpoint affect assessment of a child?

A philosophical viewpoint shapes what we value in education and how we assess learning. For example:

	•	Constructivist philosophy sees children as active participants in learning. This viewpoint encourages formative, continuous assessment (like observations and portfolios) to support growth rather than judge performance.

	•	Behaviorist philosophy views learning as responses to stimuli, leading to more formal, summative assessments (e.g., tests, marks) to measure outcomes.

	•	Humanist philosophy focuses on the whole child (emotions, social skills, self-esteem), so assessment includes self-reflection, emotional well-being, and progress at an individual pace.

Essentially, a teacher’s beliefs about what learning is and how it happens influences not only what they assess, but how and why they assess it.

⸻

2. In your view, what should the purpose of assessment be in Foundation Phase?

In the Foundation Phase, assessment should be developmental and supportive. Its purpose should be to:

	•	Identify individual learning needs so that teaching can be adapted.

	•	Monitor progress across multiple domains (cognitive, physical, emotional, and social).

	•	Guide teaching strategies to match learners’ current level of development.

	•	Encourage self-confidence by focusing on strengths rather than failures.

	•	Involve parents and caregivers in the learning journey through meaningful feedback.

It is important for education to be influential as it will determine how a child is assessed in the Foundation phase. Teachers need to focus on constructive or progressivist approach to emphasis the formative assessment so that the child can value learning. It is also essential that they alter the ways of learning so that it helps children learn even though play. This is in contrast to essentialist or behaviourist philosophies that standardise learning. Which is based on mastering basic skills. Where as when children learn holistically they are able to consider emotions and social development which makes them not view they assessments threatening in a humanist approach. These philosophies shape not only why is assessed but how and why which ultimately impact the child’s growth and development, which is why they need to be understood and supported.

In the Foundation Phase, the purpose of assessment should be to support learning and development by identifying each child’s strengths, needs, and progress. It should guide teaching, provide constructive feedback, and help create a nurturing environment where learners grow in confidence, skills, and understanding at their own pace.
