Fulgencio Batista had previously been president of Cuba from 1940 - 1944 and would again seize power during a fiercely contested election in 1952. Saying that; Batista did not genuinely win this election and instead after it was clear that he would not win the election Batista decided that it was necessary to seize control himself. Through the direction of these events it can be argued that the reaction the Cuban public had to this was the start of the the Cuban revolution.

January 1959: A large group of revolutionist led by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, over-through the current corrupt leader of, Cuba Fulgencio Batista (the head of a pro american government in Cuba). Eisenhower (the current american president) grew concerned with the revolution as it had many anti-american ties. quickly after this Fidel Castro began to become dependent of the soviet union and had almost completely formed an anti-american or anti-capitalist country with ties to communism. By February 1960 Castro had already taken control over all of Cuba (taking it away from the USA: may 1959) and had appointed many communist leaders. eventually on the 17th of April 1961 the US government sent an invasion force of 1400 Cuban exiles to the bay of pigs. It was hoped by the USA that the exiles would be able to over-through Fidel Castro's regime. However due to the fact many of the invasion force were un-trained and lack of military tactics eventually lead to the defeat of the exiles after being overwhelmed by the application of air strikes and other tactics. consequently and unfortunately for the USA the bay of pigs incident undeniably led to the formation of stronger relations between the Soviets and Cubans. The Cuban army would now be provided with modern military equipment and specialist training from the Soviet union, this was interpreted by the USA as Russia using Cuban as a base of operations in order for them to go on the offense against america.

Although the cuban democratic system could have been described as corrupt and non functional it was recognised by the Cuban population as superior to the dictatorial system run by Batista. this democratic support can be seen in the form of rising political star 'Fidel Castro'. Castro's popularity, most likely would have lead to him winning a seat in congress, however Batista's obvious power grab and cancellation of the election definitively prohibited Castro's political career.

However this trial did not prove to be the end of Castro and instead through the application of his law based career. Fidel managed to molded his trial into a detailed prosecution of Batista's dictatorial regime. During this time Castro is famously quoted as saying 'History will absolve me'. In the end Castro was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Although imprisoned, Castro became know as a national hero and idol for many people in poverty

May 1955: after the application of huge international pressure Batista's government was made to reluctantly release many political figureheads and those that followed them. Soon after the Castro brothers made their way to Mexico where they formed the '26th of July movement' with members such as Camilo Cienfuegos and Che Guevara. in November 1956, 82 men crowded into a yacht and set sail to start A new Cuban revolution. Unfortunately for the 26th of July movement, Batista had found out about their journey. this leads to only a handful of revolutionists to escape. Situated in the impenetrable highlands, the recently founded revolution quickly reformed and gain many new members. through this, they managed to acquire many weapons and successful armed themselves. this democratic movement then launched a series of gorilla attack, disrupting and destroying many military outlets and targets.

Fortunately for the 26th of July Movement, many smaller revolutionist groups had decided to join their cause and lead to the loose alliances between Fidel Castro's democratic movement and other Anti-dictatorial activists. Swiftly after this apparent gain in the rebels momentum, Batista decided to order a large number of his army to the highlands in summer 1958. unfortunately, through the application of guerrilla tactics, the 26th of July movement managed to gain victory over this portion of Batista's army, many of who switched sides to join the rebellion. After this, in late 1958 Fidel Castro launched a full-scale attack with the aim of overthrowing Batista. On the way, there ware many victories, most notably Guevara's victory over a much larger force causing the 'liberation' of Santa Clara. due to castor's clear victory over many parts of Cuba, government officials tried to negotiate with castors in order to reduce the bloodshed. upon the realization of his inevitable loss, Fulgencio Batista decided to cut his losses and run. he left officials outside his inner circle to resolve the situation with the now uncountable number of revolutionists. overall the people of Cuba seemed to be relieved and after and long journey welcomed Fidel Castro into Havana on July 9th, 1958.

At this moment in time the U.S.A and soviet union had terrible relations and were considered by historians to be in the midst of the cold war. After the launch of the U2 spy missions -which where high altitude planes that flew over and took pictures of countries such as Cuban and Russia in order to gain a proper understanding of what they are capable of- but of the 14th of October 1962 a U2 plan manage to photograph a soviet SS-4 medium range ballistic missile. the newly elected John F Kennedy took the situation with Hast and immediately called together a group of advisers know as ExCOMM. J.F.K along with ExCOMM would them go on to spend almost two weeks trying to resolve this political and national catastrophe.

The main problem that many people had with the potential installation of these missiles in Cuba, is that they were so close to America. from the point of launch, the nuclear missile would only have to travel 90 miles to reach Florida. The prospect of the soviet union being able to fire a nuclear missile on America shot the united states government into the hot seat and thus made them deal with the potential of Russia's devastation. Russia and more specifically Nikita Khrushchev had realized this move to be risky, they had decided it could be justified this highly proactive step as a defense against the many European and Hungarian Nuclear operations designed to take down the USSR if need be. another justification for the Soviet missiles in Cuba was to better any future aggression the Americans had towards Cuba, unfortunately for the U.S.A they had recently attempted an attack of Cuba putting them on the morel and political back foot. finally many critics of Khrushchev's communist regime highlighted the failures and inadequacies of the Berlin wall, this left Khrushchev as though he needed to prove himself and by out witting president Kennedy he would be outwitting the west.

On the 16th of October, Kennedy swiftly put together an executive commit that was responsible for all events and decisions regarding the missile crisis, this commit was shortened and came to be called 'ExCOMM '. When we look back we can now see that within Kennedy's and ExCOMM's office it was an undisputed fact that the missiles placed in Cuba Could not remain their. This sparked many ideas over the coarse of a week, many of such initializing war or militant action against Cuba. However it was decided by J.F.K that the US would take a less violent and calmer approach to the situation. It was instead decided that america would form a navel blockade using the u.s navy, this would cut of all imports and exports the soviet union had with Cuba. soon after Kennedy decided to broadcast his idea to the rest of america, and so on the 22 of October 1962 J.F.K announced that installation of the blockade and the hope this would prevent the instillation of nuclear missile in Cuba. Many american thought that the soviets would simply ignore the blockade and a new war would insure, Kennedy decided this to be a possibility and thus prepared 54 bomber each with a nuclear warhead, just in case war broke out.

the bulk of the crisis began to unfold two days later on the 24th of October when soviet apples ships stopped just short of the naval blockade. although it would appear that the sea blockade was working in releasing the prospect of war, it wasn't. in Actuality the sea defense did nothing to get rid of missiles already in Cuba and added pressure to the relationship between the soviet union and the USA . even when considering the ridiculous amount of pressure put on both of these superpowers, they still found a way to resolve the conflict. during this crises Kennedy and Khrushchev had been in direct contact, this lead to two letter being sent by the USSR proposing that either; we will remove our missiles from Cuba as long as you promise not to invade and we will dimple our nuclear weapons in Cuba if you Pull out your nuclear weapons from turkey. president Kennedy went with the fist proposal, but it was latter decided that the missiles in turkey should be withdrawn.

Although from the american point of view was a negative it was in fact not completely accurate, the warped impression that the american people had led to their own oblivious actions and misunderstanding of the soviets actions. Khrushchev didn't want to to start a nuclear war at all, this is seen on the 23 of October in the way he actually order the vessels sailing towards the blockade to turn around, this was a fact the Americans were oblivious to.
