- Nothing was done governmentally to stop the terrorization.

- Blacks were not protected.

- The KKK started following the input of laws.

-Laws fell through and did not put a stop to this clan.

-Blacks were beaten, robbed, hanged, homes were burned, and more.

-Members of freedman's bureau attacked and supporters of black rights.

-Overall no political action or enforcement was taken even though stated laws declared equal protection on all civilians

-Although the government instructed enforcement to break up the KKK it was not followed through and in the long term the attempt was ceased.

The Impeachment of President Johnson

Johnson sparks conflict by pardoning powerful confederate leaders, allowing them to return to positions of power in their local governments.

That's made congress angry.

Later on Johnson attempted to veto two of congresses reconstruction acts, which they continued to override.

Congress attempted to impeach Johnson for the first time in America's history. This was a revolutionary idea which nearly succeeded. Congress fell 1 vote short of impeaching him

Enforcement Acts (1870-1871)

-Send in Federal Troops to scare off KKK who were using terrorism to alter politics.

-On the verge of the 1873 Panic which inevitably made the Republican led Federal Government change their focus on the suffering economy in the North and abandon the pursuit of the KKK

In the 1860s and 1870s a revolutionary thing happened. Once oppressed blacks like Hiram R. Revels became politicians. This was a massive change from before as blacks were no longer slaves but now they were influential figures in society.however this would not last as white supremacist groups such as the kkk ousted blacks from the political limelight

Freedman's Bureau (est. 1865)

- Despite Johnson's attempts to veto any benefits to the Bureau, Congress overruled the president for the first time ever

- Many freed men were helped by the Bureau, even poor Southern whites

- The Bureau did not last long, for by 1869 most of its funding was gone

- In 1870 violence from the KKK weakened the Bureau

- In 1872 Congress disbanded the Bureau entirely
