Today there is only 31 states who use the death penalty. Major crimes today include murder, rape, treason, burglary, manslaughter etc. The punishments for these crimes can be jail time, life sentences, jail row, and the most severe is the death penalty. Major crimes during the Elizabethan Era included treason, spying, blasphemy, sedition, rebellion, murder, witchcraft. These were met with very painful and embarrassing punishments. Nobles were often beheaded if they did something wrong. They had equality when it came to punishments. Lower classes were sometimes executed for begging.
