I will use my current workplace to identify events that could have been dealt with more professionally.

1: When attracting talent - The add they use and the job description that is send to you/me, is two different things all together. You apply for a job that suits your KSA (Knowledge, skills and Abilities). What you end up doing is somewhat different than what was agreed upon. The interview process was very cold and distant. Not a lot was said or asked. I walked out not knowing if it went well or not. I feel that they should be more open from the start of what is expected from you and have clear guidelines of what you are expected to do as well.
2: Moments that Matter - When I completed my first diploma, I did inform them that I needed time off to attend the graduation ceremony. (this was huge to me as this is the highest qualification I have achieved.) Nothing was said or mentioned. When I got back to work the next day, there was not questions as to how it went. (from management). My co worker was lovely.
I feel that a company that claims to be family orientated is sitting the pot miss in a very big way.

A employee survey should be done at least once a year. This should be done anonymously so that we can feel free to voice our concerns and unhappiness. Truth be told I don't keep quite much lately. I can not work in unhappy UN kosher environment. I need to make my office my happy place during the day as my kids and husband is not there to keep the smile going. The thought of them does.

I have probably only worked at two companies that do this really well as they make a considerable effort to identifying opportunities and taking action during the employee lifecycle for the purpose of positively impacting employee engagement. The rest I'm afraid have had more of a 'lets play it by air' approach. This strategy isn't just for large companies with big budgets either, it's sometimes the small gestures that have the most impact, celebrating work anniversaries, assigning a buddy for the first week of work, putting thought into your onboarding process and like you mentioned congratulating employees on their achievements outside of work.
