Santiago's journey was filled with many trials and tests that would have caused most to end their journey, but because of the amount of courage, the idea of completing his dream gave him, he followed through to the end. As his attackers, we're leaving the leader tells Santiago about how he didn't follow his dream because "I'm not so stupid as to cross an entire desert just because of a recurrent dream... Now he knew where his treasure was."(168) This shows Santiago that this isn't the end of his Dream this was just another test. and instead of crying in pain due to losing everything or the physical pain he endured, He begins to laugh because he realizes that the reason his attacker hasn't followed through his dream is that it wasn't his. The attacker's dream was just the final part of Santiago's journey.
