Love is something that is mainly the reason for many people being down in the deepest parts of hell. On earth while these souls in hell had life they followed their natural will which was their connection to god, so when men stray from loving god and pursue their earthly desires instead of focusing on their mental will and staying connected to hell they were banished to hell. This has impacted my personal reading of the text as love is something dante explicitly connects to god but he also mentions how it’s something that can be used to explain the desire people have for certain things or people in the actual world. This is seen on page #73 “By the other mode, forgotten is that love, Which nature makes and what is after added, From which there is a special engendered.” Love for god is the primary thing to get into heaven and if you get distracted with earthly desires rather than loving god and worshiping him you’ll be sent to hell.

When Dante first enters hell the inscription says “MY MAKER WAS DIVINE AUTHORITY,

THE HIGHEST WISDOM, AND THE PRIMAL LOVE. BEFORE ME NOTHING BUT ETERNAL THINGS.” This tells us the reader how god is the source of hell as god created hell to teach sinners who didn’t love god enough and instead loved their earthly desires more how it is to be without love and torturing them in various ways physically and mentally. Love is something that our main character Dante is trying to receive/attain from his wife who he’s seeking to find by going through hell. As someone once said “Whatever is done for love always always occurs beyond good and evil.”

In Dante's Inferno, the universal theme is fate. I say it is fate because, in the first reading, his purpose for going to hell was to find his wife and his follow in Christ.

In figure 6 he mentions Beatrice is the one who he is trying to go to.

In Canto 9 it states "Naked of me short while the flesh had been, Before within that wall she me eneter, To bring a spirit from the circle of Judas;"(59This demonstrates his fate because he has an understanding of those who betray Christ.

In Canto 11 it states "From these two, if thou bringest to thy mind Genesies at the beginning, it behoves Mankind to gain their life and to advance;" (75) This also demonstrates fate because it mentions mankind which can go back and talk about everyone. Also the word Genesies which talks the beginning.
