Lots of emerging and existing ed tech tools are utilizing or introducing AI, but many of those contracts and privacy policies don't account for the data sent to the AI service. FERPA data ownership gets murky at that point.

While AI can process information, recognize patterns, and mimic emotional responses, I’m concerned about its limitations in truly understanding a person on a spiritual level, beyond the brain. From a librarian perspective, this is another huge information resource that students need to engage with critically. They already have enough trouble navigating traditional media and information sources, and generative ai can be used or misused to evaluate, interpret, and create new information sources that may be built on false information or algorithmic bias. If we don’t double down on information literacy, we’re in trouble.

As a faculty member responsible for preparing future teachers, I worry that our students may graduate without a clear understanding of how to use AI ethically and effectively in their teaching practice—or how to guide their own students in doing the same. We need to move beyond fear or avoidance and start equipping our pre-service teachers with the tools, frameworks, and critical thinking skills they need to engage with AI thoughtfully. This isn’t just a tech issue—it’s a pedagogy issue and a digital citizenship issue. At a small private institution, however, we are often slower to gain institutional support for AI integration, which can make it more challenging to innovate quickly or build cross-campus momentum. That makes it even more important to advocate for intentional, well-supported conversations and initiatives around AI in teacher education. ~Sandy Davis
