The Self-Strengthening Movement consisted of Qing China trying to adopt Western military technology and tactics. They built modern arsenals to produce repeating rifles, and industrialized dockyards to construct steamships. Ultimately, the movement was a failure due to conservatives in the government dragging things down with bureaucracy, and the difficulty of retraining and reequipping the entire, massive, Chinese military. The Self-Strengthening Movement occurred from 1861 to 1895.

Liliuokanali was the first and only queen to be the sovereign ruler of Hawai'i. She ruled during a period of American Imperialism and new colonialism, where there was increasing pressure from the United States to be annexed. In her time as queen, she attempted to re-assert the power of the monarchy in Hawai'i fighting against pressure from both the U.S. government and her adversary Sanford Dole. Dole had her temporarily deposed, but she appealed to U.S. President Grover Cleveland to have her position reinstated. Hawai'i was eventually annexed by the United States in 1898, but Liliuokanali never stopped advocating for the independence and rights of Hawaiians.

The Young Irelander Rebellion consisted of three Irish nationalists traveling across the land, trying to unite the Irish people for a revolution against British rule, aided by the anti-British sentiment in the wake of the Irish potato famine. Police came to arrest the three leaders, however they found themselves outnumbered by the rebels and took refuge in a house. At first, negotiations were peaceful, but fighting began after one of the constables fired a shot. Nearby police units heard the gunfire and came to reinforce the group trapped in the house. As the much larger police force arrived, the rebels fled. This incident effectively killed any support the people of Ireland may have had for revolution, and the revolutionary leaders had to flee the country. The Young Irelander Rebellion occured on July 29, 1848.

In 1916, Hussein Ibn Ali was the sheriff of Mecca and had gained the loyalty of many Arab people living there. At the same time, Britain was in conflict with Germany and their ally Turkey. Ali organized a rebellion against the Turkish funded by Britain, under the promise that Britain would support and ally with the new state resulting from their overthrow of Turkey. However, after Ali was successful in the uprising, Britain then took over Transjordan, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon, breaking their promise of Arab independence and effectively colonizing most of the Arabian Peninsula. Instead of supporting Arab independence, they allocated much of Palestine as a new nation state for the Jewish diaspora living in Europe at the time, leading to conflict and violence between the two groups.

The Moro Rebellion was an uprising by the Moro people of the Philippines against the American military occupation during the Philippine-American War. The Moro had a long history of resisting colonialism, and relations between them and the Americans quickly broke down, causing a punitive expedition to be sent. Fighting would continue for several years, as cultural differences prevented a lasting peace from being reached. The Moro Rebellion was not a larger uprising so much as spontaneous eruptions of violence from isolated groups of Moro. The largest amount of fighting took place from 1901 to 1913.
