In 1789, the first Congress proposed a set of twelve
amendments, written by James Madison. As required by the Constitution, the
amendments then went to the states. By December 1791, three fourths of the
states had ratified 10 of the 12 amendments. These 10 amendments became known
as the Bill of Rights

James Madison insisted that the Bill of Rights does not give
Americans any rights. The rights listed, he said, are natural rights that
belong to all human beings. The Bill of Rights simply prevents the government
from taking these rights away.
Some of the first10 amendments were intended to prevent the kind of abuse Americans had sufferedunder English rule. For example, the Declaration of Independence had condemnedthe king for forcing colonists to quarter troops in their homes and for suspendingtrial by jury. The Third Amendment forbids the government to quarter troops incitizens' homes without their consent. The Sixth and Seventh Amendments
guarantee the right to trial by jury.

Other amendmentsprotected individual rights as many states had already done. In 1786, theVirginia Statute of Religious Freedom stated that “No man shall be compelled to
frequent or support any religious worship … or otherwise suffer, on account of
his religious opinions or belief.” Religious freedom became the very first
right listed in the First Amendment. (You will read more about the freedoms
protected by the Bill of Rights in Chapter 8.)

With the Bill ofRights in place, the new framework of government was complete. The Constitutionhas endured for more than 200 years because it contains timeless principles,
yet can be amended.

In my opinion, I think that the U.S. gun control laws need to be strengthened. After the tradgety at Sandy Hook, and others similar to it in the past, we should take caution as to who can bear arms. I think that only police officials who are trained and whose duties are to protect the public should carry arms. This can cause much controversy over the topic of hunting for recreation.

In my opinion, nobody except for hunters who NEED guns should be allowed to buy them. I think that if no one had guns, then no one would need guns. I find it ironic that one of the reasons that humans will carry guns is out of protection from others with the same weapon.

I think that if you live out in the wild and provide your own food, THEN you could own a gun, but not just to have one. Guns are a weird invention that aren't used correctly. We shouldn't shoot each other and we shouldn't just shoot animals for 'fun'. It's a complicated issue, really.

Since I was practically raised in Vermont, I have been exposed to a lot of hunting. But I do still believe that U.S gun control laws need to be strengthened. I can understand a household maybe having a rifle, but no one needs a semi automatic or automatic weapon in their home. The only people who need that kind of weaponry are the people in the police force and in the military. But we have to be careful about the gun rights, because a lot of people will oppose to restrictions being put on guns. I think we should solve the gun problem by compromise. Rifles should still be legal, but any other kind of gun should be banned. No one needs a machine gun to kill a deer.

In my opinion, Yes, I do think that U.S. gun -control laws need to be strenghthened for many reasons. I strongly believe that no one should have a gun unless your working for the state/governmnet. I think way too many shootings are occurring and way too many lives are being risked in society, today. I feel that we also do need to protect ourselves and to do this schools should have metal detectors and better safety strategies other than code red. And for homes, I feel that every parent should buy double locks for their doors to keep un wanted guests.

In my opinion, I believe that the US gun-control laws do need to be strengthened. I think that no one should own a gun unless your job requires you too or you're handicapped. Now a days it's way to easy for people to get their hands on a gun and I don't think that's right, even in self defense cases. Guns aren't the only answer! You could learn self defense techniques as well.

In my own opinion, i believe that only trained officials should be allowed to carry guns. The United states need to strengthen their gun laws because look at what happened at Sandy Hook elementary. There have been many incidents where guns were used and people lost their lives. In the southern states, they have gun shows where you can just go in and buy a gun with out a wait! That is not safe because you basically could just have given a serial killer a machine gun! That is where the government should look on protecting citizens

In my opinion guns are unnecessary. For hunting and for the armies is the only reason why people need guns. Not even hunting because accidents happen. Guns for the most part are purposeless.

If you think about who/what type of people use guns for the wrong reasons, it's mainly based on their mental state. If there was a gun on a table, it couldn't hurt anyone, it all depends on who carries it and their mental state of mind. When buying a gun you normally should have an ID check, but there is much controversy on whether their should be a medical background check. This is because many people could feel that their privacy rights could be violated

Gus and i think that only the army should be the only people to own a variety of illegal weapons. Also civilians should only use semi-automatic pistols and hunting rifles. The reason why Gus and i think that civilians should have weapons is for their own protection and safety. Since there was a shooting in Conneticut and the shooter had an automatic rifle, which was an AR-15 we, the people should try to talk to a congressman in Rhode Island to amend the 2nd amendment, and make it more strict.

We think that the gun laws are not adequate because it is easy for a gun to get in the wrong hands. There should be stricter laws on how to get guns like very thorough backround checks. Gun control advocates say the recent gun laws are to weak. A gun didnt kill all those children a disturbed man did.

The Framers wrote the second Amendement because they needed the guns for protection and to fight in the militia. In the late 18th century there was not a lot of crime so people didnt worrie about other people with guns. Now there are gangs and drug wars involving guns and many deaths. Almost every adult has a gun and there are a very high number of homocides by guns.

In the 18th century was diffrent because they passed the gun control law wich prohibited mail-order of rifles and shotguns and banned felon and drug users from owning guns. The 21st century is difffrent from the18th century because the court said it applies to indivuals, not just militias that case district of Columbia v. Heller, struct down a handgun ban in Washington D.C and establish an indivual's right to keep a handgun at home for self defense.

2). We believe Finland and Switzerland have high rates of gun ownership but realitivley low rates of gun violance because, maybe they use these weapons for protecton or to hunt animals. Also maybe these citizens live in a country with law that are strict about using guns like your allowed to have a gun, but if you were to murder someone maybe the government might find out who did the crime, it could affect the family of the murderer or the muderer him/herself. That is why we think that Switzerland and Finland might have a high gun possesion rate but a lwer gun violence rate.

2) The Second Amendment was initially written because of war. Back during the revolutionary war almost every citizen had ownership of a gun. This was because the citizens made up the American malitia. They wanted to be ready to fight. the difference from back then is citizens of the U.S. dont have to fight so there is no reason to have a gun, but a lot do anyway.

4) Before the tragic events in Newtown Conecticuit the gun laws werre not moving towards getting looser. I know this because the Newtown shooting is not the only shooting in the U.S. and it wouldnt make sense to change the laws.

The framers wrote the Second Amendment because they wanted everyone to have guns to protect themselves. In the 18th century, the gun laws were less tight, and now in the 21st century, gun laws are looser and abandoned more.

2) I think the framers wrote the second amendment because they probably thought people did have the right to bare arms for positive reasons such as to hunt for food and defense. Life now than it was back in the 18th century is different. It is different because back then they needed guns for war in the 1700s there were plenty of battles and also,because back then it really wasn't that stable anyone could break into your house.

4) I think that the u.s weren't really loosening or making the gun laws stricter, I think that they didn't really think about it until the shooting in Sandy Hook. Melanie's opinion is that the gun laws were beginning to loosen because in ohio passed a law thatall schools to carry weapons for defense/ safety.

In my opinion, i think the gun laws should be inforced more. Before the Sandy Hook shooting, the goverments thoughts about guns were probably slowly faiding away. However, after the Sandy Hook shooting when almost 35 people died due to guns, the goverment got a "wake up call" to finnaly decide wether the 2nd commandment should be supported or shunned. People smuggle guns into the U.S. illegaly and i think the goverment could control better gun patrol

If this graph only had developed countries the U.S would be at the top, and quite frankly I'm not that surprised. Many people own guns and people sometimes do the wrong thing and it might affect the gun owner and maybe they think the best way is to pull the trigger which isn't the answer. Violence is not the answer and people need to know that. But that is why I am not surprised that the U.S would be at the top if the graph was just for developed states.
