The gap between the knowledge generated in the education system and the skills demanded by employers and individuals is widening. Overcoming these limitations requires a priority focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), including developing workplace skills in STEM. In early childhood education, it is crucial to start introducing these ideas to children for them to be able to further understand STEM for the rest of their schooling and life. All of my activities link to cooking; the reason is that cooking is an essential skill for children, and it can be used as continuous learning for science, technology, and maths.

Gardening engages children by providing them with an interactive environment to observe, discover, experiment, nature, and learn. Through this activity, I will be explaining the vegetation process of growing tomato and what it needs to survive. Through the days, the children will observe the tomato and see how much it has grown. The children will be allowed to hypothesize and be exposed to science through nature. The children will be exposed to specific languages like ripeness, flowering, and decaying while also learning about what plants need to service; these include water, sunlight, soil. The concepts can also be linked to what we as humans need to survive. Questions can be asked, like, have you drunk your water today so that you can be strong? Gardening can be linked to multiple areas of the EYLF. But specifically, it connects to Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners. The children have to be involved in this process as each student has a tomato plant that they need to look after, if not, their plant will start to decay, and no tomatoes will grow. The gardening activity can also be linked to Outcome 2: Children are connected and contribute to their world. More specifically, children become socially responsible and show respect for their environment.

To do this, we are going to make some tools to help us. Children need to understand that technology is any tool that humans make. The tool we are going to make is a Magnifying glass so that the children can take a closer look at their plant babies. For this activity, I will cut out slight curves for the children from a plastic recycled plastic bottle that the parents will have to provide me over a week. I choose a plastic bottle instead of buying bottles to introduce the importance of sustainability. Once I cut a curved shape out of the bottles, the children will then take a piece each and line up to fill it with a little bit of water. The water mixed with the plastic creates a magnifying effect, and this can then allow the children to see the plants up close. Once all of the children had taken a closer look at their plants, they can pour the water onto the plants. The idea about making our magnifying glass allows children to understand the concept that we can make something both useful and sometimes a necessity; this is technology. This activity links with Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators; specifically, children use information and communication technology to access information
