Why Are Abortions Needed?

In a 2018 study done by the Guttmacher Institute, women who have undergone abortions were surveyed on why they chose to have one. Note that each woman was allowed to choose more than one option. The overwhelming reason that soared above every factor for why they chose to have an abortion was socioeconomic concerns/ not financially prepared. These are not murderers or baby-haters. These are people who wish to birth a child when they know they can provide a fulfilling life for it. Other reasons for abortion are the safety and health of the mother, such as ectopic pregnancies. During an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg is growing outside of the uterus, the most common place being the fallopian tubes. This pregnancy causes internal bleeding and with or without an abortion, the fetus will still not be able to be carried to term. It is true that abortions occur because the woman is simply not ready for the child or does not want it or in more extreme cases, rape and incest. It is an impossible idea to ban just one reason and only allow it when the mother's life is at risk. I believe all abortions should be allowed because without the law allowing medical resources for it, it will still happen, but it will cause a lot more harm for the mother.

Abortion is the medical procedure or act of terminating a pregnancy, typically performed during the early stages of gestation to prevent the development and birth of a fetus. It involves the deliberate removal or expulsion of the embryo or fetus from the uterus, either through medication or surgical intervention. Abortion can be a complex and emotionally charged issue, often involving considerations of ethics, morality, legality, and personal beliefs.

Christianity rules the majority of politics for the United States. The majority of politicians are heavily influenced by christian beliefs. This country does not claim a religion, but these congressmen, judges, senators, and presidents, all claim christianity as their personal faith. The debate of pro-life or pro-choice all boils down to one question: When does life begin? It is the hardest one to answer because you cannot prove consciousness in the womb. And if you do, who is to judge that the fetus’ life has more value? Christians believe God is the sole creator of human beings and that he calls each individual to be born. This provides a source of a before. Although it cannot be proven that fetuses in the womb are fully conscious, “For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy” (Luke 1:44). With the baby leaping for joy in the womb, that only supports the idea that babies in the womb are conscious and have emotions. They can tell good from evil. Religon also plays a major factor into why women have less rights then men. We are seen as our only purpose being child bearing objects. The men are known for being powerful achievers, but women are meant to be in their shadows. Although you cannot ask someone to completely condemn their own beliefs, we could at least ask each other to not force their beliefs onto others.

Abortion is one hundred percent healthcare for women. It saves so many lives for women. It is protection, it is safe. However, let us discuss the alternatives. Birth control can either can implanted into your uterus or arm, or it can be taken via oral prescription pills. Another form of birth control can be emergency contrapceptives such as Plan-B or condoms. Pro-lifers are quick to use these as an easy alternative for abortion, however some call for all contraceptives to be banned. These are not easily accessable to everyone, whether that is because o financial issues, judgement, age, etc, but if you are priveledged enough to gain access to them, you will have to succumb to the inevitable side affects. Any drug or implant that changes your hormones and natural bodily function, will impact you greatly. When you are usingbirth cont rol pills, you are at risk for experiencing nausea, weight gain, changed libido, increased risk of blood clots and osteoporosis, frequent and dramatic mood changes, etc. With intrauterine devices also known as IUDs, they are extremely painful to be inserted with no offer of pain numbing, incredibily invasive to one's body, and it can pierce the uterus causing more medical intervention. The side affects are an increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, dramatic mood changes, and heavier or more painful periods. Continuing, using barrier methods such as diaphragms or condoms can cause allergic reaction, discomfort, irritations, and decreased sensation while performing intercourse. And without those methods, leaves us with either a hysterechtomy or getting your tubes tied. These are irreversible and extremely hard to get access to. The worst part of it all is how uneducated your everyday doctor is about these methods. These contraceptives affect everyone differently and we need to have access to more accurate information before we are prescribed them.

Roe v. Wade

The Supreme Court case: Roe versus Wade, ruled in 1973, protected the right to a woman’s decision to an abortion. Then, in 2022, the life saving court case was overturned. The nation was filled with shock and it has led to more nightmares for the fight for the purpose of reproductive rights. The decision provided a significant right to privacy for any American (Temme, L.,2021). This case protected abortion rights up until fetal viability which is about the six month mark. Pregnancies are extremely complex and unique for every woman involved. The six months allow the woman time to process making a life altering decision. Now in most states, the law says you cannot have an abortion after six weeks which is also when the first heart beat is heard. Most women do not know they are pregnant until about six weeks and it is extremely cruel to ask someone to decide if they want an abortion within less than a week. This erupted a fight or flight mindset for many women, because the overturning of this can lead to many other loopholes to get rid of our rights. This is not an overturning to save children's lives, but a war on women and their bodies.

As previously stated, the main reason for women choosing to have an abortion is for economic reasons, which means the demographic of women facing the most hardships with an abortion ban are low-income women. To have a kid means paying for frequent doctor visits, clothes, food, taking time off of work, etc. That is not possible for millions of Americans. If these women live in states where abortion is illegal or heavily restricted, they will not have the means to travel to have one performed. Women of color also are extremely affected because they are paid the least amount and are fearful to facing racial judgement from healthcare workers. Young girls face these hardships because most of them do not have the money, are not married which means they would have zero spousal support, and are strict under parental control. Many strict parents will strenously refuse to educted their sons and daughter on safe sex, let alone allow them to get birth control or condoms. These kids do not know any better and are too afraid to ask for help. Lastly, immigrant communities are at the highest level of risk out of all because many do not have health insurance to afford it and if they do not have proper documentation, they will risk being deported. Making abortion illegal will only support more systematic injustices that only hurts the vulnerable communities.

As a young woman, I have never felt a maternal feeling or a need for a child. As a kid I was always so scared of birth and I knew it was not for me. I would never wish to be forced to have a child and I would'nt wish it on anyone. If I didn't live in California, I wouldn't know how to cope. I will forever advocated for women's bodily automony. To force a woman to go through an unwanted pregnancy is the ultimate form of torture and it will never be justified. I can only hope that the fate of women's rights starts to look up from here.
