Researcher: Katiya

Mormonism was founded in 1830 by a man named Joseph Smith, in Fayette, New York. In 1820 Smith saw a pillar of light descending in the woods, and an image of God and Jesus Crist appear to him and tell him that the Christian churches have strayed from the truth, and that he shouldn’t join any of them. In 1823 Smith receives a vision of the angel Moroni who tells him about a Book buried in the hillside. Guided by his vision he locates the box where the book is stored but every time he tries to touch it he is shocked and thrown back. He is told by Moroni that he must return on September 22ndfor the next 4 years to be instructed by god on his mission. In 1827 Smith finally is able to dig up the golden plates of The Book of Mormon successfully. He uses a special pair of glasses to translate the book, and in 1829 the first written copy of The Book of Mormon is produced. Smith and his scribe, Oliver Cowdry go into the woods and pray, and they are visited by John the Baptist, who in anticipation of The Church of Crist, names Smith the first elder of the church, and Cowdry the second. The Book of Mormon is published on March 26th 1830, and the first meeting of The Church of Christ of Latter-day Saints is held by Smith and Cowdry on April 6th, 1830, on a farm in Fayette, New York, with about 50 people in attendance. This is the official start of Mormonism.
