When adding the - lig suffix it then becomes hyggelig, an adjective that means healthy or cheerful. This is why in Norway after meeting, greeting, and name introduction, they exclaim "Hyggelig!", meaning "Nice to meet you!". The hygge lifestyle is the lifestyle of the Nordic, and there are different names for it in all of Scandinavia. The word to describe it in Norway is koselig, and in Sweden it is called trevelig. In Denmark, the southernmost country next to Norway separated by only a strait, is where hygge and hyggelig have different meanings and have a whole new concept of living in Danish culture. Hygge is lived daily in Denmark and it is the obsession with the art of being cozy. The home is truly the primary place of where hygge resides. It is so beneficial to bring the outdoors in when decorating hygge style. The utilization of neutral color palettes and fresh, natural items into the home will bring peace, harmony and tranquility. It is also the natural setting for the invitation and gathering of family, friends, and loved ones. Meik Witing has said that he likes to call hygge "socializing for introverts", which I think sums the concept of hygge up quite nicely (1)! It is all about bringing forth comfort, coziness, and the feeling of being "home", at home or anywhere. I believe candles (including flameless candles) and twinkling lights were invented just for this purpose. Candles are really essential when it comes to having an inviting and comfortable home and with that being said twinkling lights too, but the latter is a much newer invention! Just a strand or two of twinkling lights hung around in the home is all that is needed to conjure ambient feelings. The use of texture in Scandinavian decorating really is set apart from all the rest. Coziness is a huge part of life in the Nordic countries due to the long, cold, and dark winters with minimal light.
