In many societies, gender stereotypes and norms have set in this idea that women are the lesser to men. In the early decades of the 1900s, women were specifically to care for the home, and for the children. While the men went to work, the breadwinner. Women were perceived as subservient to the all glorious man. These stereotypes have died down, but have had lasting effects. It's not easy to completely get rid of ideals that have been the societal norm for centuries.

Celaena Sardothien is the most notorious assassin in all of Erilea. She was previously captured and imprisoned. Now she is to be in a competition for the role of the king's champion. She is only 19, and the only woman in the competition. Since no one knew what she looked like, she was to pretend to not be the famous assassin she is. Celaena has to pretend to be a petty jewel thief who could never actually protect herself.
