Major takeaway: we (schools/districts) need a SYSTEM OVERHAUL to create healthy practices that are sustainable and effective.

This section made me feel really seen as an educator. The part about the four things teachers really want is spot on - time, money, autonomy, and support. It also challenged me to think about pushing back against problematic policies in a more vocal way. I found myself wishing this were required reading for administrators, and then it turned around and challenged me to think about my own policies.

I appreciate the acknowledgment of teacher wellness, but also the importance of not punishing a student for not following an "old school" rule. I also love the idea about being the change, and how we can contribute to a positive culture just by talking to a different colleague and making that connection.

While this is typically the responsibility of a leader/administrator, everyone can participate in positive school culture by "each express[ing] our care for our coworkers" (138). If we show our caring for the people we work with, we are also modeling that behavior for our students. Win-win!

I loved the idea put forward of "Everything up until now, same for teachers too!"

The topics I raised were around teacher pay, but only because that is one of the most salient details about sustainability in schools for us professionals. Something I have enjoyed about this text is the emphasis upon creating these sustainable spaces for everyone involved and so this section was pretty neat. I feel like our administration here has listened to many of these suggestions, and have tried to meet our needs, but ultimately there's still a lot eft to our imaginations when it comes to sustainability of classrooms and systems. I am left with the lingering questions of what does this look like? We engage in many positive initiative and have a very progressive approach as a building, but how can we improve the work-life balance of teachers? Is it something we need to address as a building, or are there just too many things out of our hands and far above our pay grades?

The expression that has oft been muttered in many differing circles of labor is, "Something's gotta give" So what kinds of stuff will help to make this profession more sustainable for teachers AND students?

This section really addressed some of the concerns I feel & needs I have as a teacher. It felt relevant despite being aimed at school leaders. I also liked how it talked about all of us sharing the responsibility for creating a culture of care.

The big concept from this section (for me, of course) is that of applying practices we believe will promote equity and address/minimize trauma for students TO TEACHERS.
For 18 years, I've griped about the hypocrisy of "experts" and administrators telling us what "best practices" we need to implement for our students, but then doing the exact opposite for teachers.
This is the first book I've read that explicitly states we need to do the same for teachers. Despite my experience, I feel like this profession has become ever more unsustainable, and this simple notion, which is fundamentally related to our shared basic humanity, could start the pendulum back in the other direction.
The next step is getting every administrator and school board member in the country to read this book and embrace this truth.
-CM

I appreciate the section on teaching children about the larger systemic influences that impact their behavior and ideas. It is never to early to start teaching social justice and a accurate understanding of differences in the world. Children as young as 3 can begin to tell these differences so we should be giving them the information to process their world as well. I also appreciated the section on going beyond just telling children they matter, it is how we talk to them, around them, and how we interact with others that helps students understand their growing world as well.

I like how this section focuses on teacher wellness and how if self care isn't promoted at the school, supporting students becomes harder. I'm curious what this book would look like if it were written today rather than at the beginning of the pandemic. GP

I really liked 'Model your own Learning'. This is something I think of often in my classroom. As a white, cis gender, middle-aged woman, most of my students have very different identities than my own. I'm very interested in learning more about having restorative justice convos in my classroom. I want to examine how my identity impacts those relationships, not only with students but with other staff members as well.
