Thus, for Chavez, ideas about language— namely, proficiency in English— figure
centrally in determining whether U.S. Latinas/ os will join an unmarked, assimilated
American “melting pot” or remain a racialized group, separate and apart
from white Americans. 

Do you think speaking "perfect English" is enough to be part of the "melting pot"? or are there other factors that contribute to that?

The idea and process of language standardization, then, highlights how Standard American English has come to its level of prestige because of any inherent qualities; rather, its association with speakers of high prestige –the White, upper-middle class– creates a superior cultural image of the language variety which, in turn, “consolidates and continues” the privileges of the speakers associated with the prestige variety. 
Discuss with your groups, Will a change in attitude towards different languages/varieties of languages be enough to combat the idea of a standard language, or are there other changes we should consider? If so, which ones? 

Is this a personal or a systemic matter?

In Alim et al., we see how Puertorican and Mexican students have different opinions about the best "Spanish". Mena highlights the idea that for many people "the perfect Spanish" is spoken in other places but home. 

He talks about the "Language- Elsewhere" and mentions that it is 1)a colonial invention, 2) it is designed to produce racial, colonial, and linguistic hierarchies, and 3) becomes what it needs to be. 

What are your thoughts about this?
