Despite its CSR initiatives, Unilever has been accused of unethical business practices on a number of occasions. These include:

Environmental pollution: Unilever has been accused of polluting the environment through its operations. For example, in 2001, Unilever was found to be dumping mercury waste into a lake in India.

Human rights abuses: Unilever has also been accused of human rights abuses in its supply chain. For example, in 2020, Kenyan tea workers filed a UN complaint against Unilever alleging that the company had failed to protect them from ethnic violence in Kenya in 2007.

Unethical marketing: Unilever has also been accused of unethical marketing practices. For example, in 2011, Unilever was fined by the UK Advertising Standards Authority for a misleading advertisement for its Dove soap.

Who exposed their unethical CSR practices?

Unethical CSR practices have been exposed by a number of different sources, including:

Media investigations: Media investigations have played a key role in exposing unethical CSR practices at Unilever. For example, in 2001, the Indian media exposed the mercury dumping scandal at Unilever's thermometer factory in Kodaikanal.

Non-governmental organizations: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have also played a key role in exposing unethical CSR practices at Unilever. For example, in 2020, the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) published a report that accused Unilever of failing to address human rights abuses in its tea supply chain.

Whistleblowers: Whistleblowers have also played a role in exposing unethical CSR practices at Unilever. For example, in 2019, a Unilever employee leaked a memo to the media that revealed that the company was planning to cut jobs and close factories.

Unilever has denied many of the allegations of unethical CSR practices. However, the company has also taken steps to address some of the issues that have been raised. For example, in 2001, Unilever announced that it would stop using mercury in its thermometers. And in 2020, Unilever announced that it would invest €1 billion to improve the sustainability of its tea supply chain.
