The Trials

During the Salem Witch hunts, young women would fake being possessed by the accused. Spectral evidence is when the accuser can see demons and witchcraft and no one else. This is still used as evidence against the accused. It didn't matter that the accused were saying they were innocent. If a man or women were found guilty and not confessed, they would be hanged. If they confessed to witchcraft, they would be spared.

Hanging

Once convicted, they took the accused to the hill to hang them. The last had to watch as many people were hanged before them. When one is hanged, it is normal for their bodies to twitch, but to them, this was just another piece of evidence. Bridget Bishop was the first woman hanged in Salem which was significant and caused unrest. Some of the bodies were dug up after they were hanged because the families wanted to give them a proper burial.

Jail

In jail, shackles were put on the prisoners. It was said that one of the women put in jail had a daughter who confessed in order to join her mom in jail. This little girl was only four years old, Dorcas Good. There was even a pregnant woman put in jail, but not hanged. This shows how awful these times were, friends and family turned on each other during this time. Four people died in prison.

Young Women and new Attention

It seemed like it was mostly women and young women that were being possessed at this time. Girls spread their accusations in other cities because of the attention they received. All of these women were like celebrities. At this time, men ruled over women and children and were never heard. The Witch trails changed this. The girls began to accuse people not thought of as witches like men, upper class, and ministers.

The Witch Tests

A way to prove one guilty was through witch hunts. They would pierce them with needles and even put them in water. If there was blood, they would be cleared. No blood meant they were convicted of witchcraft. Swimming was a test since the water was known as pure and therefore, rejected evil. A real witch would float and an innocent person would sink.
