1. Forms of Collective Behavior- Panic

Source Weblink: http://www.quotehd.com/quotes/abdul-walid-quote-the-crowd-started-to-panic-and-women-and-children-were-being-trampled
I chose this quote because chapter 15 states how when a crowd of people develop panic as a collective behavior then it makes situations much worse. " In panic behavior, however, the flight is irrational and uncooperative." (Thio 407). When a crowd of people are all trying to escape a dangerous situation the self control and thought process tends to disappear. The quote I used relates to the chapter because the man is stating how everyone lost control in the situation, the same way chapter 15 states how panic is a very dangerous collective behavior because nobody is thinking in their right mind they are just trying to get away which could cause more damage than necessary.

"It succeeded in using its military power to defeat Iraq swiftly" also, "It succeeded in using its soft power to persuade the United Nations." (Thio 417). This cartoon is an example of the different methods that the US uses to remain the strongest country. Even though the statistics are not as good the tactics that America uses keeps them at the top.

This image relates to chapter 15 because it talks about the challenges and responses that civilizations have. "The fate of a civilization, according to Toynbee, depends on both the challenges presented to a civilization and the response it devises." (Thio 418). A civilization can crumble based on how it reacts to a situation but it can also flourish. Giving up will cause society to crumble but coming up with new ideas can lead to success.

"By exploiting workers, capitalists fuel rage and resentment among workers and lead them to feel that they have nothing to gain from the present system." ( Thio 420). The disadvantages that the workers face can cause them to revolt against capitalism. That revolution can cause a major social change by turning a capitalist system into a communist system.

5. Symbolic Interactionist Perspective: Changing Interaction

"If the individuals are young and therefore familiar only with the current world, their worldview will differ from their parents' view of the earlier world." ( Thio 420). Human interaction has changed over time and people interpret it based on how society is at the time. Behavior is different in modern day than it was in the past because social interaction is constantly changing, therefore, so is the interpretation of society.

6. How US Society Has Changed Since the 1970s

"The U.S. economy is more prosperous than before." (Thio 421). If looking at the chart, someone would think that the 70s was a much better time, however, there is more gender equality, more students finishing college, and healthier lifestyles now than it was in the past. America is more competitive now due to the large number of college educated people and things do cost a lot more than they did in the past but overall the U.S. has made great strides in bettering themselves as a nation.

(Thio 423). America will continue to get more competitive and require more in order to be successful. Technology will continue to advance and a regular high school education will not cut it anymore. This quote relates to the chapter because with all the intellectual requirements that will be wanted in the future, more and more people will be wanting higher education.
