Shanghai Population Characteristics

Shanghai is the most populated city in China and the biggest city in the whole world. Shanghai’s population is about 24.5 million, which means, Shanghai has more people than the whole of Australia. Shanghai has an average of 2,059 people per square kilometre. This number increases to 3,854 people per square kilometre in urban areas though. The city itself’s area is 6,430 square kilometres which isn’t very big considering the amount of people who live there. Melbourne, Australia’s area is a total of 9,900 square kilometres which is bigger than Shanghai, and Melbourne has around 5.2 million people living there. And when I go to Melbourne I think it’s crowded!

Shanghai’s population is 89.2 percent urban and the other 10.8 percent lives in rural areas. Migrants make up a large 39% of Shanghai’s population and most are from Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan and Sichuan. Nearly 99% of Shanghai’s population is of Han Chinese ethnicity with just over 1% of the population belonging to other ethnicity groups. Shanghai also has over 150,000 foreigners, including around 31,500 Japanese, 21,000 Americans, and 20,700 Koreans. These foreigners are officially registered foreigners so the actual population would likely be much higher.

Shanghainese has been traditionally the language of Shanghai for over 20 years, but nowadays Mandarin is spoken more and more over Shanghai and there are concerns that Shanghainese will become a dead language in a couple of years.

Shanghai has one of world’s worst pollution ratings and extremely terrible air pollution. At the start of 2013, Shanghai had one of the worst air standard of all time. Approximately 32 of the first 90 days of the year were regarded as kind of or very hazardous to the population’s health. And even later on in the year the pollution became much worse. Dr Saint Cyr has said that long-term living in the city causes a 49% increase in a chance of getting lung cancer and 32% increase in heart disease deaths when compared to people who have clean air. The EU has said that only 17.7% of a full year in Shanghai would be considered 'medium' or 'low' pollution.

Shanghai History

Shanghai was founded around the 11th century and was only a very small village until around the 12th century when the place expanded and transformed into a little market town. Shanghai profited from being adjacent from Hangzhou and slowly became a bigger and bigger town. In the 1400’s, Shanghai was considered to be important enough for the Ming Dynasty workers to start extending and widening the small Huangpu River. In 1553, a wall was built around the city to stop the attacks from the Wokou who were Chinese pirates. The city kept growing bigger and bigger and in 1664, Shanghai’s leading commodities became to be cotton and textiles. Shanghai grew and grew and soon its population would grow to 200,000. By the 1800’s there were three different settlements living in Shanghai. In 1845 there was a British settlement, and three years later an American settlement was established and only a year later a French settlement was made. In the 1860’s the British and American settlement joined together but the French settlement remained a settlement of it’s own. Although Shanghai had its own part of the city for the Chinese, many native people who were born in Shanghai still chose to live in the foreign settlements. This created a mix of cultures that changed Shanghai's views and made the city more open to the Western influence. Shanghai became a very important industrial city and it’s trading and export port became huge. Shanghai started providing more and more exports, at first it was tea, then silks and porcelain were later also exported from Shanghai and opium was imported. The textile industry was also booming. In 1866 the entire city gained gas light, it was also one of the very first to do so. Electricity also first generated in Shanghai in 1882. By 1900 Shanghai had grown enormously to be a city of 1 million. Christianity became more and more popular and by 1904 a Christian cathedral was built in Shanghai. In 1936, Shanghai was one of the largest cities in the world with 3,000,000 inhabitants. Only about 35,000 of those people were foreigners, but they controlled nearly half of the city. Skip forward about 75 years to when the Shanghai World Financial Centre was built in 2008. 4 years before the Shanghai Maglev Train opened in 2004. Then in 2010 the World Expo was held in Shanghai. Today Shanghai is a big and flourishing city. It is the largest city in the world with a population of 24.5 million.
