It is important to show readers characters' actions instead of simply telling them about their expressions.

Example:

"She was afraid."

"Her face was frozen in fear."

It is also crucial to establish tone through characters. Describing the body language of those in a classroom versus a doctor's office can help readers understand what the tone of the writing is.
