You are the activity maker. Your job is to come up with a short activity for your group to engage in. The activity should somehow be connected to the reading for that day and should take no longer than 5 minutes. Be creative!

For example,

- have your group create a newspaper front page, with headlines fitted to what happens in the reading

- working together, draw a comic strip for a scene you’ve read

- create an advertisement poster to promote sale of the reading

- draw book covers that match the reading

You are responsible for considering the context of the events in the novel and bringing in artifacts, which will help your group members make sense of the content. When completing your job, you may decide to bring in maps, timelines or perhaps a narrative account of the main historical/contextual events in the chapters to share with your group members. A key part of your job is to remind students of the importance of perspective when considering context.

Questions to consider:

How did the historical context of the novel impact the characters?

How would the novel change if the setting shifted?

What decisions did the context force upon the characters?

The discussion leader is responsible for developing a list of intriguing questions that can be discussed in the literature circle. for leading the discussion, and for keeping everyone on task. Begin the discussion with “big idea” questions and keep it moving, based on questions from the other roles (yours and others), and contributions of those with other roles. Most importantly, make sure everyone has equal access to the floor.
