It was formed because these people wanted to stop slavery in the United States. One of the most well known Abolitionists was Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was an escaped slave before he joined the movement to stop slavery.

Horace Mann the creator of this movement was a strong supporter of public education for everybody. Horace Mann created the Public Education Movement and became the "father of American public schools".
Mann spoke to many people about his belief of the importance of education.
