This book can be used to offer students a different perspective of the journey immigrants, particularly Mexican immigrants, take to reach the United States. It can also be used when addressing standard 2.RL.IKI.9 by pairing it with another book that tells the story of immigration to the U.S. from a different perspective or culture (TN Dept. of Education, 2017, p. 37). I think that this book would also be suitable for students who have recently immigrated to the U.S. so that they can see themselves reflected in literature. Esperanza Rising is best suited for independent reading at the middle school level; however, as a read aloud, fifth graders could digest a chapter or two a day.

White's (1952) classic is best suited as a read aloud for grades 3-5. It is a useful text to introduce students to narrative elements of novels such as setting, plot, characters, etc. For this reason, it can be used to address the fourth grade standard 4.RL.KID.3 which states, "Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific
details in a text, such as a character’s thoughts,
words, or actions" (TN Dept. of Education, 2017, p. 29). Charlotte's Web is also a great book for this standard because the emotional connection readers make with Wilbur and others allows students to dive deep into discussions about the characters' feelings.

This text can be useful in integrating literacy into social studies instruction because it takes place during the Civil Rights Movement and addresses some key figures and events from the time period. By pairing this book with other books about the time period, such as Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., teachers can address content knowledge necessary to meet standard 5.RI.IKI.9 requirements (TN Dept. of Education, 2017, p. 37). This book can be a great way to detail to young children the life of Dr. King, Jr. and the impact he had on the Civil Rights Movement. It can serve well as a read aloud during social studies instruction to engage or introduce students to the topic of Civil Rights or MLK Jr. Day.

This is a read aloud tailored for grades K-2. The book addresses the issue of exclusion that sometimes occurs through the formation of clubs among students. The narrator's perspective of being the one excluded helps students to feel empathetic towards him and the other outcasts in the story. This is a particularly useful book for addressing respect for others and kindness. Standard 1.RL.CS.4 can be met by asking students to "identify words and phrases" from the story "that suggest feelings" of the narrator and the other characters (TN Dept. of Education, 2017, p. 31).

This is a brilliant read aloud for K-2 students when introducing the life cycle of plants in science instruction. The rich, content-specific vocabulary helps teachers to address science content while also incorporating literacy through reading into the lesson. Standard 2.RI.KID.3 is met when reading this book aloud because students are able to conceptualize "scientific ideas, or steps in a process in a text" (TN Dept. of Education, 2017, p. 29).

Because of Winn-Dixie

This book can be read aloud to students in grades 3-5. It can be used to help students address emotions that come with loss and to see the beauty in what they do have, rather than viewing the world from the lens of what they lack. I think that this book can spur on good conversation about deeper subjects like emotions. Because of Winn-Dixie can meet the standard 4.RL.KID.3 as students are asked to "describe in depth" Opal, her feelings towards her mother, new friendships she discovers alongside Winn-Dixie, and her journey to forgiveness and content with the people around her (TN Dept. of Education, 2017, p. 29).
