I Prefer teacher directed during specific lesson time. Such as learning phonics and numeracy.
There are subjects such as science, social emotional development, that would be much easier with child initiated method, it would allow children to understand and be able to relate it much easier. However with a whole class of 8 students, it would be hard to do child initiated for things like phonics and counting as every child have a different interest. For example, if I use dinosaur as counting object, the child who love dinosaur would love it, however the child who loves elsa would not like it and end up with a little tantrum. This would also depends on the age group, children 5-6 years old could easily accommodate to everyone's interest in rotation, but children who are 3 years old, may not.

I prefer Teacher-directed approach as it is easier to have more control of the class. That is all depending on the lesson subject and also the amount of children in class. It's true that Child-Initiated approach will keep the children motivated, but imagine having 10 children in a class and the teachers will be on their toes to constantly changing activities. That would not give the teacher a better control of the classroom.

I prefer a mixture between teacher directed & children initiated. Teacher directed is suitable for subject such as Math, languages, science. Easier to control big class & meet the lesson's objectives. Child initiated more suitable during free play, art craft. Though it is child initiated, however it is still within a controlled environment. Teacher need o prepare the material, brief on the activity, and define the objective and learning outcome.
