Any factor that prevents a message being recieved or correctly understood

Reasons for barriers to communication:
1. Failure in one of the stages of the communication process
2. Poor attitudes of either the sender or the receiver
3. Physical reasons

Failure in one of the stages of the communication process:
1. The medium chosen may be inappropriate
2. Forgetting important information that was conveyed
3. Misleading or incomplete messages
4. The excessive use of technical language or jargon
5. Too much information
6. Channels of communication too long

Poor attitudes of either the sender or the receiver:
1. Sender is not trusted
2. Intermediaries
3. Poor opinion or perception of the receiver that no effort is made to ensure clarity of message or to check on understanding
