Justify your answer.

The people, because at the end of the day the authorities want to hide that there are disappeared people and they don’t go to extremes to look for them. The people who do it for solidarity, are the people who actually care to look and find a missing person. The media is not the most relevant because they usually lie and say what the government tells them to say.

In the video some activists mention that no matter which political party is in charge at the moment, the lack of interest and results given to the victims’ families stays the same. This blame shift causes the news to be biased cause even though the government could help enormously to minimize and resolve this issue, they are not the ones directly responsible for the disappearances, and the blame should be put to the terrorist groups that cause the dissaperances in the first place.

Lack of victim representation or missing voices: (mins. 0:30, 0:50)

Victims’ families have taken matters into their own hands and merit since the government has not helped find justice for the victims. Even in different states, different cases of missing people all agree that political participation in Mexico is not enough to help find these victims.

Reflection:

After having heard what some of the members of FUNDENL had to say about the disappearances in NL and how bad the problem is and how little there is to do for the people that have been affected we believe that media can 100% help improve their chances of helping and of being heard about the issue so it can be reduced. Social media has been proven to be a form of communication with not only your community but people all over the world, so we believe that if they started implementing the use of media they would reach way more people and therefore get recognized by people who could help the association. In the conference the speakers mentioned how they reach people by talking to others on the street, putting quilts in parks, etc. This is a good way but we believe using the advantage of social media can be way more useful for them. In the conference they also mentioned that when they went to do protest they were not well received by the government and others, by using media they can get everyone to be on their favor and therefore the government to allow the protests and even help the association afterward.

How does Antoine´s story mentioned in the Module, relates to Mrs. Lety Hidalgo story? Explain.

These two stories relate to one another because they are both about people grieving and looking to avenge their lost family members. In both of these stories there is a lack of government action and in general the situations are similar, with activists having to take charge of seeking justice and no government action is taken.

Which of the 7 ways to participate mentioned in the Module suits best to describe Mrs. Lety Hidalgo and FUNDENL ´s activism? Select at least 2 and justify its connection by providing examples shared at the Conference.

Volunteering & Campaigning. In the conference, Mrs. Lety Hidalgo spoke to us about how important it was for the community to volunteer during their events. They are always volunteers who help them in their search for dissapeared people. Campaigning also relates to them because it is basically what they do. They organize campaigns in order to create awareness and concienticize people. This also helps to make the problem more known and hoping for change in the future.

How Mrs. Lety Hidalgo actions and civic participation had created a positive changed both for yourself and others? Explain

Mrs. Lety Hidalgo's actions have created a positive change because it has created awareness in many communities and people are more careful about their whereabouts because they know what can happen. It has also created a change because many people have contributed to the search of bodies of the missing persons.

As of August 30th 2023 there are 105,083 missing people by the cause of forced dissaperances. Families and the people in society are worried about this issue not getting solved and angry at the lack of action issued by governing parties. When comparing different cases of forced dissaperances in different states, years, etc. we can see the lack of action towards solving the issue is exactly the same. Lack of institutional willingness to help the issue is what keeps the missing people missing and the families mourning. The best way to fix this issue would be to attack the source and find out who is making these people go missing. The government could help by making this a more spoken topic and having more action taken in this aspects. The director of Idheas mentioned that lack of action is keeping Mexico from solving or reducing this problem. Activists have taken the issue in their hands and done many different things to help solve this. Activists are searching for these bodies and people without any help from other governmental figures. Media representation is low but taking action would help improve things immensely.

Biased language that shifts blame (revictimization)

The article always speaks respectfully of the victims and the case, but there is a text where the message can be misinterpreted, as if they were not giving it the necessary importance and are minimizing it when they say "that it is not confirmed that those responsible were agents of the state." This can be interpreted as a strategy to remove the responsibility or the burden that the state was bearing. It can be seen as if they wanted to get rid of the problem quickly without worrying about many aspects.

Lack of victim representation or missing voices

The article does include the voices of the victims' families or the victims themselves, but they could have more dialogue or given more importance to their feelings, their experience, the impact they had after the disappearance, and what the legal and mental process was like. This could make people feel that they are paying attention to the families and are genuinely trying to help them.

Government or official narratives dominating the report

The article mentions several things about the government's position, but I think it could have been said less, since many of the things it said were not confirmed and there was not enough evidence to prove them.

Sensationalism or omission of key facts

The article is well written and structured, but I think some important details were omitted, such as the government saying things without having the evidence to back up what it was saying. They don't say much about the backgrounds of the people or how many cases are similar or how many disappearances there are. This can generate doubts and lack of understanding in the readers.

REFERENCE APA

Rojas, A, G. (2018, abril 27).
