Usman, a first-generation South Asian student pursuing a Biology program at UTSC, embarked on his academic journey with the weight of familial expectations on his shoulders. Despite his excitement about being the first in his family to attend university, Usman faced significant challenges related to academic pressure, cultural expectations, and mental health struggles.

Usman's parents immigrated to Canada with the aspiration that he would become a physician and support the family in the future. This immense responsibility, combined with the excitement of starting his academic journey, created a unique set of challenges for Usman as he entered UTSC. The transition to university life proved more challenging for Usman than he anticipated. The workload in the Biology program was overwhelming, and the diverse teaching styles didn't align with his preferred learning methods. As a result, Usman found himself with passing grades, struggling to adapt to the academic demands and rigour of university-level coursework.

Usman's first year at UTSC was marked by social isolation. He had no friends on campus and felt disconnected from the student community. The lack of a support system outside of his family added to the stress he was experiencing, making it difficult for him to navigate the challenges of university life.

Entering his second semester, the pressure mounted on Usman, and he began to feel overwhelmed. Balancing academic expectations, family responsibilities, and the need for personal well-being became increasingly challenging. Usman struggled to manage his stress levels and faced a dilemma when it came to seeking help due to the cultural stigma surrounding mental health in his South Asian community. In South Asian cultures, discussing mental health openly is often considered taboo. Usman hesitated to seek help, fearing judgment from his parents and family. The lack of understanding and awareness about mental health issues within his cultural context created a barrier for Usman to access the support he desperately needed.

Despite excelling in her studies, Gurpreet finds herself trapped in a cycle of stress and depression, with limited time for self-care and an aversion to seeking help due to financial constraints.

Gurpreet's commitment to her education is evident in her high grades, but the financial burden of tuition, housing, and food costs has driven her to work three part-time jobs. While moving in with her partner has eased some financial stressors, the relationship dynamics are adding another layer of complexity to her already demanding life. This is seen through ongoing arguments and disagreements on a daily basis, leading to growing unhappiness among the couple.

Gurpreet's relationship issues with her partner have become a significant source of stress and emotional turmoil.

Matteo's academic journey has been marked by a lack of motivation and interest in his chosen program. This issue has persisted across two universities, prompting the need for a closer examination of Matteo's academic interests and goals. It is crucial to understand the factors contributing to his disengagement and work towards finding a program that aligns with his passions and aspirations.

Beyond academics, Matteo enjoys playing a variety of sports, yet he faces uncertainty about how to get involved in sports activities at UTSC. His preference for a non-competitive environment adds a layer of complexity, as he does not feel comfortable in competitive environments. He is also not sure how he would find time to be able to pursue anything beyond his education and what that management would look like.

In addition to academic and sports-related challenges, Matteo is questioning his gender identity. This aspect of his journey adds a unique layer of complexity and requires a supportive and inclusive environment. He feels discomfort at the thought of speaking to his peers or family about his questioning, as he does not want to be excluded, and wants to be accepted into the UTSC community.

Fiona, a newly arrived international student from China, embarked on her academic journey at UTSC with dreams of academic success and personal growth. However, she soon found herself facing challenges that extended beyond the academic realm.

As a non-native English speaker, Fiona faced challenges in expressing herself and understanding complex academic concepts. Fiona’s struggle to connect with others became apparent in her first semester. The language barrier made it challenging for her to engage in casual conversations, hindering her ability to form meaningful connections with peers. Despite her desire to make friends and immerse herself in the multicultural environment at UTSC, Fiona found herself spending most of her time alone.

Compounding Fiona’s isolation were financial difficulties. As an international student, she faced the burden of high tuition fees, accommodation costs, and daily living expenses. Fiona’s financial constraints became evident when she expressed concerns about affording her housing and nutritious foods. She found herself cutting corners and compromising on essential needs to make ends meet. One aspect that further intensified Fiona’s feelings of isolation was the limited availability of authentic Asian food options on campus. Fiona missed the comfort of her home cuisine, and the lack of familiar food choices contributed to her sense of homesickness.

Joshua, a mature student entering his third year at UTSC faces the intricate challenge of balancing academics, fatherhood, part-time work, and religious practices. Despite his adept multitasking skills, Joshua struggles to find time for his faith, connect with like-minded individuals on campus, engage in affordable weekend activities with his child, and provide nutritious meals within a limited budget.

Joshua successfully manages his academic responsibilities while working part-time, showcasing strong multitasking abilities. However, the multiple responsibilities he juggles create time constraints, making it challenging for him to practice his religion and connect with his faith community.

The lack of information about spaces or individuals who share his faith contributes to Joshua's struggle to maintain religious practices. Joshua is also unaware if any students will exclude him as a result of his religious beliefs and therefore there is some hesitation around quickly joining a group or meeting new people.

In addition, as a father, Joshua wants to ensure he is able to engage his child in as many programs and activities as he can offer. However, a large issue around this is the financial constraints that limit Joshua's ability to participate in paid weekend activities with his child. Joshua's limited budget and knowledge also hinder his ability to provide healthy meals for his family. The limited budget in addition to the lack of information sums up to unhealthy options for his family.
