Blacks were forced to work in very harsh environments and were labeled to be at least second-class citizens. In the journal "To ask for an equal chance: African Americans in the Great Depression" by D.W. Bilal it states, "African Americans were only 64 years beyond enslavement, with de jure segregation relegating them to second-class citizenship and generally only the meanest, dirtiest employment. The Depression made things worse".

Ernest Crinchlow was an African-American Painter, Illustrator, Graphic Artist and Educator. His goal in life was to show the struggles and constraints that had been placed in the colored community. He had actually worked along side Jacob Lawrence; both were supported by the Works Progress Administration(WPA). When Ernest was talking about a piece of art work he did he states "I try to show all od the emotions... I'm interested in clarity." This is relevant because most of his work show you different emotions and lifelike situations the Black community had to deal with.

During The Great Depression, African Americans' little part of the economy or social standing was ripped apart from them. African Americans would try to live off of the low wages and males or their families would try to maintain their job. If they didn't have a job would try to get food, clothing, or housing. Families that worked for a white family or white person gained little money from cleaning the house, cooking, or taking care of the children.
