Her spirituality was also deeply rooted in devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Catherine admired Mary’s faith and encouraged the Sisters to honor her by learning from her example. She suggested they call on Mary’s help when caring for the sick, pray a part of the Rosary daily in her honor, and strive to imitate her virtues. By following Mary’s example, Catherine believed the Sisters of Mercy could more fully live out their mission. Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, then, was not just an expression of Catherine’s faith but also a guiding part of her spirituality.

Catherine wanted to ease people’s struggles. She believed that helping others through both spiritual care and everyday acts of mercy brought people closer to God. She often said that a Sister who does not serve is like a knife that rusts or a well that dries up from not being used.

Her life was like a light in the darkness, bringing hope where there was ignorance and poverty. She taught that every believer should be a spark of light, a source of love, and a positive example for others.

Catherine also gave up wealth, time, talents, and even marriage to follow Christ fully. She chose to live simply and in poverty, just as Jesus did, and was ready to accept the cost of being His disciple.

Mother Catherine often pointed to the humility of Christ and Mary as examples to follow. She taught that humility must be lived out in prayer and daily actions, since every good result comes from God alone. She believed God gives special blessings to humble souls, but also expects them to use their gifts well. For her, humility meant not clinging to words like “me” or “mine,” but instead showing selflessness in what we do.

Her life demonstrated that true witness requires consistency, humility, and perseverance, even when met with resistance. Catherine encouraged others by example, showing that ordinary life, when guided by love and mercy, can become a profound testimony to faith.
