My background image represents my social issue because for a long time it was a controversy whether or not drug offenders should be punished by prison or some other way. Rehabilitation centers get drug addicts the help they need before going into a harsh sentence. These offenders won't go anywhere but back on the streets doing the same exact thing if they're sentenced a long term without any professional help and guidance. An addiction with drugs is very serious and if offenders don't want to even stop then jail time is pointless in the end. Rehabilitation needs to come before harsh prison sentences because it impacts the whole community after they come out.

This video explains how drug addiction is an illness not a crime. When these people use drugs; a lot of the time it is the only things they know how to do. The Baltimore PD is giving these people an opportunity to get better instead of putting them in prison sentences.

The book I chose was Treatment versus Punishment for Addiction. It goes over an analysis of the national drug-related legislation. An evaluation of drug laws and policies by both the law enforcement and drug treatment practitioners. And an evaluation of drug-addicted offenders undergoing drug treatment versus punishment and their outcomes. In this book they think drug addiction and drug-related criminal behavior should be treated as a psychiatric disorder and a chronic disease.

My second book is called, 'Alternatives to Prison: Rehabilitation and Other Programs (Incarceration Issues: Punishment, Reform, and Rehabilitation)'. It goes over alternatives such as, house arrest, community service, day reporting, and boot camps. Prison doesn't always have to be the option. There are other solutions and rehab and other facilities are the answers in today's world.

Lindsey Lohan is a perfect example as why drug sentences don't help people with addiction. She has gone in and out of jail for drugs countless times before going to rehabilitation center before her sentence. She never coped with her addiction and never realized it was an illness with going back and forth.

This article is about how we have to stop pushing drug addicts in and out of prison doors instead of focusing on treatment plans and rehabilitation centers. The justice systems needs to put a stop on their addiction instead of putting a hold on it until they get out of prison. Treatment plans are most effective on making drug addicts clean. We're spending too much money on incarceration then treatment plans that could actually be beneficial to our community.

There is a lot of opinions and debates on this topic. I think it all comes down to your beliefs and your up-bringing. I believe that addiction is an illness and you need help before being thrown into prison without any help and guidance. It takes a while for someone to get back up onto their feet with a straight mind. If someone is willing to get help then I say go for it and put punishment to the side. But for people who don't want help and don't care then they should be the ones getting punished because they're a threat to everyone around them, including themselves. Addicts need help before any type of punishment.
