I don't know if this comment will go under this area but we as agencies/trainers may support adult learners by scheduling trainings according to the attendees schedules. For example, we are aware most child care center facilities schedule trainings during the time children nap or a day assigned for professional development. Most family child care providers end their workday around 6pm or at least they have a few children around this time. We can support adult learning and help create a learning environment if we schedule trainings after 6pm. I know this may be an agency decision but when trainers have an option and want the training to have an impact, should be scheduled in the evening. Sorry, too much writing.

I agree with Alba telling stories are the best way to engage an audience. Storytelling leads to empathy and understanding from the participant. "Oh, I get it. That's happened to me." Or "I can imagine that happening in my situation." There is a lot of research on the powers of stories to engage, create community, and get participants to participate.

Are you familiar with SECD? Briefly, this is the training platform used by the World Forum on Early Care and Education. They have a whole training for ECE. Since participants are from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, South America, etc., they have developed a platform for adult learners from different countries and first languages, as well as from different backgrounds. I'm not sure if you can get access to it, but I hope you can. I think it would help.

Whether in-person or online, it's essential that a safe space is created for the learners. This means coming together and deciding how the group will interact and learn. Group guidelines, like actively listening, practicing respect, being present, etc., will ensure that people feel safe, the agenda is followed, and people are engaged.
With large groups, there are ways to manage icebreakers. However, this always means breaking down the group into 2-4 people smaller groups whether in Zoom rooms or in-person.

We need to deal with trauma for our childcare providers, the parents, and the children. If we don't, we are putting band-aids on symptoms. We need to provide ways that our participants can heal first and practice self-care in order for them to offer the most loving and transformative education and care for our children.
