Il fonctionne à l’aide d’une base de données unique dont plusieurs modules y sont rattachés. Par exemple, le module gestion commerciale qui permet d’établir toute la chaine des documents commerciaux et le module gestion des ressources humaines avec la gestion des absences ou des maladies. Ce logiciel peut être utilisé par plusieurs personnes simultanément.
          Il présente différents avantages. 
o   D’abord, le workflow qui permet une automatisation des tâches de travail qui fait gagner du temps.
o   Cela facilite la commutation, en effet, le PGI peut émettre des messages pour l’ensemble des employés. Ceci permet d’éviter de faire des erreurs.
o   C’est une base de données commune maniable pour tous.


        Le système informatique d'une entreprise représente l'ensemble des éléments permettant d'y traiter l'information automatiquement. en entreprise, il est caractérisé par son but, ses moyens, ses méthodes et ses règles. il assure le traitement des informations utiles pour l'entreprise.
Alors que système d'information d'une entreprise est l'ensemble des éléments qui doivent permettre à chacun d'y disposer pour son travail. Il peut être totalement manuel ou automatisé.
