At the beginning of the knowledge of concussions, they were often known as a blessing; they could have been more severe. Later on, they learned once concussion can be one too many and may cause long-term mental and/or physical problems. There is also more than one kind of concussion; there is strains. Many athletes hide the signs/symptoms of their concussion because they are afraid to lose play time or be benched. Early RTP can cause second impact syndrome, permanent damage to the brain, or even death. The NFL has created laws on plays and protocols to reduce concussions. Helmets have then came along. Helmets that have the higher STAR rating, the less impact the player experiences. In this case, helmets have helped a lot. Helmets are advancing as of position specific helmets and unique impacts. It isn't necessarily the impact, it is how much the skull is put into motion. You don't even need an impact to the head to get a concussion; a sudden or drastic change in acceleration is sufficient enough to cause a concussion. A helmet may stop your head from splitting open but it will not stop your brain from moving inside your skull. If engineers could figure out a way to stabilize the neck to prevent the violent swings of the head, maybe concussions could be prevented. Head surrounds and HANS devices are used to help race car drivers however, football players need to be able to move their head and neck. Concussions last a few days but they can last for weeks, months, or sometimes forever. The more time that passes between injury and diagnosis, the harder it becomes to link present symptoms with previous head trauma. The SCAT5 framework measures the value of a person’s cognitive function when he first sees them, to establish a baseline against which future progress can be measured. Since concussion symptoms can change over time, and there’s no telltale marker to indicate the extent of recovery. There are many eye test and other coordination test to see if your "in-sync" which could also prevent concussions. People thought it wasn’t a concussion unless someone lost consciousness. Now there is more knowledge on concussions and it will keep players from going back into to the game too soon and prevent more serious injuries. More and more people are becoming aware of the dangers of concussions and are motivated to seek help.

Concussions play a huge role in head injuries in the general society. Football is one of the leaders for concussions in athletes. However anyone can get a concussion and not necessarily be from a blow to the head. It could be caused by the force of the brain to the skull or a change in speed/force to the head. Helmets were thought to help reduce concussions but they cannot completely protect the head and there are many types of concussions; helmets are not as effective as they were thought to be. Concussions used to not be a serious topic and there was very little knowledge on them. Now concussions is a very serious topic and there have been many studies and researches on them. People are gaining more knowledge and information on concussions and the TBI rates are going down because of the gaining knowledge people have on concussion.
