Fold each strip in half midway along its length, unfold it again, and draw a heavy felt-pen line along the crease.  
Repeat this process on several strips of paper, marking each with a different-coloured ink.
Place the end of each stripe in a bowl of water. (You may have to raise the bowl slightly to help the water soak down through the water.)
