Dally's Motivation

In S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders”, Dally’s motivation is Johnny because he is what Dally cares about the most. One time this is shown is when Dally committed suicide when he found out that Johnny had died. The second example is when Dally says "I was crazy, you know that, kid? Crazy for wantin' Johnny to stay out of trouble, for not wantin' him to get hard. If he'd been like me he'd never have been in this mess" (9). The final piece of evidence that supports this, is when Johnny gets stuck in the burning building and can’t get out; Dally rushes in to save him. Dally had no interest at all in saving the kids that were in the burning church but as soon as he finds out that Johnny is still in the burning building, he rushes in to save him. All these examples show that Dally’s motivation is Johnny.

Dally´s Strengths

Dally has a lot of strengths including he is tough, has street-smart, and is very realistic. He always tells Johnny to toughen up and that he won’t survive in the real world. Also, he doesn’t have a real home so he has to spend a lot of his time on the streets. Therefore, he has lots of street smart. His street smarts are shown in the book when Pony and Johnny come to him and tell him what happened and he knew exactly what to do. This is what he said "Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville," Dally instructed. "There's an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain. There's a pump in back so don't worry about water. Buy a week's supply of food as soon as you get there--- this morning, before the story gets out, and then don't so much as stick your noses out the door. I'll be up there as soon as I think it's clear” (54). This quote is a great example of how Dally has a lot of street smart. If Dally didn’t have street smarts, then Johnny and Ponyboy would have been in trouble.

Dally´s Type of Character

Based on the way Dally acted in the story, Dally is one of the protagonists, he is a static character, and he is a round character. At the beginning of the book, Dally was very realistic and didn’t have great social skills. Towards the end of the book, Dally still was very realistic and didn’t have great social skills. Dally is one of the protagonists because he fought for the Socs in the rumble. This is what he had said in the book. “Dallas was right beside me, already on top of someone.

"I thought you were in the hospital," I yelled as the Soc knocked me to the ground and I rolled to avoid getting kicked.

"I was." Dally was having a hard time because his left arm was still in bad shape.

"I ain't now."

"How?" I managed to ask as the Soc I was fighting leaped on me and we rolled

near Dally.

"Talked the nurse into it with Two-Bit's switch. Don't you know a rumble ain't a

rumble unless I'm in it?" (122).

Those were just a few of Dally’s characteristics.

Dally's Weaknesses

While Dally has many strengths, he also has many many weaknesses. For example one of his weaknesses is that he has rude social behavior. One rude thing that he did was when he was at the movies was that when Cherry told him to get his feet off of her chair he says to her “Who’s gonna make me?” (19). Another weakness that Dally has is that he is not booksmart. This is shown by the fact that Dally dropped out of school, and he does have a job. The final weakness that Dally has, that I am going to talk about is that he likes to get in fights. This is a weakness because makes him a lot of enemies, including the police, who come to him first when a crime happens to see if he knows anything. These are a few of Dallas Winston’s weaknesses.

Dally's Personality Test

According to the personality tests that we filled out for Dally he has an ESTP personality. One example of a trait from this personality is that they like to go out and do stuff instead of just talking about it, which fits dally very well. For example Dally is often talking about fighting, but most of of the time he doesn’t spend much time talking he goes out and fights instead. Another example of a trait from this personality is that they often leap before they look, this means that they often do things before they think about them. This personality trait is shown when Ponyboy is talking about the experience at the movie theaters and says the following, “Nobody else was there except two girls who were sitting down front. Dally eyed them coolly, then walked down the aisle and sat right behind them. I had a sick feeling that Dally was up to his usual tricks, and I was right. He started talking, loud enough for the two girls to hear. He started out bad and got worse” (18-19). In this excerpt Dally walks up to the the only two girls at the movie theater and sits right behind them and without thinking once he starts saying some really bad things loudly so the girls can easily hear him. The final trait from this personality that I will be talking about is that people with this personality like to live a risky life style and try new things. This completely fits Dally because that is who he is, he like to live in the moment and take risks that most people would not take. These are three of the traits from the the ESTP personality, and why they fit Dallas Winston (Dally).
