Throughout the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is very critical of those that he comes in contact with and views them all as phonies. After being kicked out of several schools, he becomes bitter towards others and doesn't believe that anyone is genuine. Holden feels that the world is filled with hypocrites and acts as if it is unbearable. Even though he views everyone as phonies, he conforms to how they act because he is lonely and wants company. Holden does not want to be a conformist but during the process he actually becomes one because of his actions and how he tries to fit in. For example, he gives himself fake names to new people and takes on a new identity so that he can conform to a character that people want to be around. As Holden tries to fit into the world around him, he is continuously rejected by those around him causing him to be resentful and become superficial.

"Her son was doubtless the biggest bastard that ever went to Pencey, in the whole crumby history of the school. He was always doing down the corridor, after he'd had a shower, snapping his soggy old wet towel at people's asses. That's exactly the kind of guy he was.
'Oh, how nice!' the lady said. But not corny. She was just nice and all. 'I must tell Earnest we met,' she said. 'May I ask you name, dear?'
'Rudolph Schmidt,' I told her. I didn't feel like giving her my whole life history. Rudolph Schmidt was the name of the janitor of our dorm. (Page 54 - 55)

"At the end of the first act we went out with all of the other jerks for a cigarette. What a deal that was. You never saw so many phonies in all your life, everybody smoking their ears off and talking about the play so that everybody could hear and know how sharp they were. Some dopey movie actor was standing near us, having a cigarette. I don't know his name, but he always plays the part of a guy in a war movie that gets yellow before it's time to go over the top. He was with some gorgeous blonde, and the two of them were trying to be very blase and all, like as if he didn't even know people were looking at him. Modest as hell. I got a big bang out of it."
(pages 126-127)

- Stradlater is considered a phony because he creates the appearance that he is clean and popular but Holden sees his bad habits that no one else sees.
- Sally Hayes is a phony because she she says she loves Holden, yet she talks to other guys and is critical of him. In the process of criticizing her phoniness, he reveals his own.
- D.B. is a phony because he is "being a prostitute," by moving to Hollywood to write. He sacrifices his story writings for writing screen plays, which gave him more money.
- Allie and Phoebe are the only characters that Holden doesn't call phony because they are both innocent in his eyes. Since they are both young children, their minds aren't corrupted and they are sincere in their actions. He is emotionally anchored to them, revealing that a genuine love keeps his view of them as pure.

The Catcher in the Rye is based off of conformity and phonies because of the fact that Holden himself is a phony and tries to conform in some situations. This drives his thought process to view the world as irritating, as well as altering his behavior to a harsh one.
His vision of the world is impaired to make him see everything as fake, which is why he assumes that everyone holds the title of being a phony. In the scene where Holden is walking through his old school and he sees curse words, the reader is able to see how he is trying to protect the innocence of the children from being exposed to the conformity and phoniness of the world. The obvious tone that Holden uses is sarcastic and judgmental. He is not serious about anything that he mentions and is critical of everyone that he comes in contact with. This tone is portrayed continuously through the actions of Holden and his attitude toward conformity and phoniness.

Salinger utilizes the topic of phony vs. conformity throughout the novel in order to develop the character of Holden. The reader is able to see Holden's attitude towards this topic through his views and mindset. He judges based on phoniness, revealing that he himself is superficial because he is very quick to judge. As he points out the phoniness in others, he reveals his own. After attending several schools that strived to change the students to fit their standards, Holden grew resentful of the conformists within the schools. He was disgusted by all the phoniness, proved by all the times he got kicked out of the schools. He hated all the conformity in the schools but failed to see his own conformity. Through his battle with conformity, Holden struggled to fit in, becoming someone that he believed would be liked by society. The development of the character of Holden is clearly seen through his conflict with phony vs. conformity.
