When I first read this scene in the play, this line caught my eye since it reveals Lady Macbeth's thoughts on her own person. I love the manner of using pretty figurative language to actually insult her husband and relate her evil feelings. It made me laugh at the same time since Lady Macbeth seems to like the idea that she is full of evil and no guilt, yet earlier she mad an excuse for why she, herself, couldn't kill Duncan. I chose the quote because it is an interesting choice of words that make you think a second in order to understand it, and because it is a quote that anyone who knows me would never imagine me saying.

“His is a zero-sum approach to world affairs in which the “winner” takes all and diplomacy is for losers.” It reminds me of Lady Macbeth who works for her own interest. “The United States has become less respected under Trump, polls suggest, and as the president disdainfully discards the nation’s mantle of global leadership, erstwhile close allies are relying less on America and instead are going their own way.” Trumps careless actions remind me of Lady Macbeth who also seems to not care about what others think, which led to their destruction when the thanes took the problem into their own hands. “They’ve lost a good bit of faith in American leadership and what America stands for.” Just as Lady Macbeth lost hope in Macbeth at first and later the thanes would too, lots of the world has lost faith in America, under Trump.

Novel connection

Lady Macbeth and her motives slightly remind me of the Novel Rebecca by Daphne DuMarier, in which the main protagonist falls in love with a man who we find out murdered his first wife. The circumstance of the murder sounds very horrible and thought out, leading the protagonist to question his character and her decision. She sticks with him and soon discovers the truth that his wife was only after his money. She very quickly after marriage had an affair and was blackmailing him when he murdered her. This justified murder in his mind, reminding me of Lady Macbeth's reasoning for Duncan's murder and why she does not feel guilty as well. The protagonists character reminds me of Macbeth who has to decide whether to support the murder or not. She feels horrible about the death, especially since the wife was pregnant, but she ultimately accepts the reasons and guilt in helping him escape charges of murder. The obvious connection is also since it is between a couple. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth pressures him and in Rebecca, he must pressure her into believing him and helping him in court.

2. I often speak to Mrs. Macceca in the library when printing or checking out books. I thought she would definitely be a good candidate for the test. I said my line, again, probably a little bit too obvious that it was memorized, and she stopped for a moment with confusion and then broke out in a smile. She had had another student do this to her as well and therefore knew about it being from Macbeth. We then had a conversation about the book and I related to her my amusement at Lady Macbeth's very dramatic character and how I liked the book as a whole compared to the other Shakespeare books I had read.

3. I was on the phone with my older brother, and sadly my only brother, who was on his way to work. We were speaking about some current issues going on and he mentioned again how he was happy to be quitting this part time job soon that is at the casino. I, personally, think he gives up too quickly, even if he has a lot of school work, so I mentioned my slight disapproval, which I then followed with my quote. He was confused at first and asked me to repeat myself. He almost took offense but also made a joke that our hands are not of the same color (since he has a slightly darker skin tone). Then he went on with what he is saying since he accepts most of what i say and then forgets it a second later.

It is a bit difficult to connect this quote to current events, but the United States and the Paris climate agreement is a little ridiculous in how our government has acted to it. Lady Macbeth calls Macbeth a coward. We should be calling our government and Trump cowards for their “withdraw[al] unless the terms of the agreement are renegotiated to be "more favorable to the American people.”” Our government chooses to ignore the problem and is more ambitious than for its own good, even though we "make(s) up almost a sixth of all global emissions.”

I think the theme of guilt is a big part of this quote as well. I hate to bring up terrible events but the Texas church shooting is a very large topic right now. It was a mass shooting, which is not what Lady Macbeth and Macbeth had just committed. But Macbeth was already showing guilt and repentance for his actions. I don know what the thoughts of that man was after he shot 26 people, including 8 kids, but I know that it ended with him . “shot[ing] himself in the head with one of two handguns he had taken to the church and was found dead after his car crashed.” The ending of the play also supports the idea that guilt is too much and will end in self-destruction just as it did for Devin Kelley. No one can live with a dark heart of which Lady Macbeth describes.

When I first read this quote, I didn't realize how antagonizing Lady Macbeth is being. I thought that she was just stating her statement and making the point again that her heart was much darker than his. However she is realizing the danger of him giving their guilt away for others to see and therefore uses the word shame. She shames to wear a heart so white. In other words, she is embarrassed of Macbeth and his non-masculinity. The significance is that it shows how Lady Macbeth extends her influence and has a very large part in Macbeth becoming paranoid yet determined. I think Shakespeare was probably very proud of this line, as he should be with many, since it is such a nice and easy way of putting the words, in order to relate the deeper meaning of cowardliness and evil.
