Freedom fighters like mahatma Gandhi are remembered for his freedom struggles and his thoughts. Lives of such people influence us a lot .
We can take many values from lives of these people.
But there are also many people who had done many good deeds for the society but are not recognised.these people are the unsung heroes.people are also remembered for the bad deeds they do to. People like Adolf Hitler are known for their ideology. Hence I agree with HW Longfellow that people are known for the deeds they do.hence we must try to do good deeds for the society and do our part in make the world a better place.if our actions and deeds are really done with a good intention then they will be remembered for a long period of time

It is us who need to know that these great men are a reminder that  we too can leave our own mark on the world. It is possible.
He gives each an everyone an encouragement to do great deeds. Neither Marble Nor Gilded Monuments  can withstand the effects of Time and War. It is only the good deeds of men that live after them and Immortalize them

Great men can be referred to as anyone who has done something remarkable or notable. I do not feel that great men are the ones who are successful or with good deeds but they are someone who has achieved something in their life as a lesson to think and teach in the future. 
Mahatma Gandhi left a mark so did Hitler but they are remembered differently yet they are immortal. 
Eternity is not what is dominant but the medium through which eternity is acquired is what that matters. 
HW Longfellow wants people to get inspired and leave a mark but how the world perceive it, is going to make the impact as history and future is created by the people.

My Outlook on this quote, reflects what i think about ones deeds. People Come and Go in your life, and you shake hands with thousands,  and frankly not everyone is going to remember all thousand of them! But the people we would remember are the people who have left an impact on us - Good or Bad, we will remember it, and that is what H.W Longfellow wants to tell us.

Our world has had a fair share of such individuals, People who have left their 'Mark' on this world. 

Alexander the Great, Shaka Zulu, Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte have been known for being great generals/commanders.

The work Nelson Mandela did in stopping Apartheid, Mahatma Gandhi did in freeing India were not in hope for Fame, but for their people. 

Mozart, Shakespeare, Michelangelo have been remembered for their works in Music, Literature and Art respectively.

And there have been cases where the person has been remember not for his/her good deeds. 

Such as - Jack the Ripper, Adolf Hitler, Aileen Wuornos, Etc.

What i feel is that although many people leave their mark on the world, I think the ones who take the world by awe are remembered more. 

As mentioned in the examples above, Works of Music, Literature and Art have helped in people feel their emotions and express themselves, But Serial Killers and so, have shocked the world in a way that has left the people thinking - How can one commit such crimes?

Concluding My thoughts,
I think that although a mark is left by an individual, it depends on how deep that particular mark is, because seasons change as time passes by, and its the deep marks that survive a Sandstorm!
