The critical incident I present in my video is based on a situation that occurred on September 9, 2024, during a second grade class, in which one of my students, José, who has ADHD, accidentally said the translation of a word out loud. This act generated a negative reaction from his classmates, who called him out loud and made mocking comments. In the video, I describe how I handled the situation at the time, reflect on the importance of fostering empathy and understanding of differences in the classroom, and how this incident made me reconsider the need to educate students about conditions like ADHD.

During her immersion practicum at a public institution, Angela witnessed an incident where a fifth grade student was crying after being insulted by some people, who told him he was “too fat.” Deeply affected by the situation, Angela approached the boy, comforted him, and conveyed a positive message, reminding him that what mattered most was what he thought of himself, not what others said. Her empathy had a great impact on the boy and the other students who witnessed the moment.

_____________________________________________________________

Based on Angela's incident, I Angie Carolina Gongora will answer the following questions:

How would you recommend your partner handle this situation?

I would recommend that Angela continue to handle the situation with the same empathy and sensitivity that she showed. It is important to validate the student's feelings and offer emotional support, just as she did by reminding him of his personal worth. In addition, it might be helpful for Angela to inform the school authorities so that they can intervene, especially on issues related to children's emotional well-being and their interaction with outsiders.

What do you think your partner learned from this critical incident?

Angela likely learned the importance of empathy in teaching and how a gesture of emotional support can have a significant impact on students' lives. In addition, she likely understood that as an educator, her role includes not only academic teaching, but also being a source of emotional support and personal guidance during difficult times for students.

After reflecting on your critical incident, would you react differently if it happened to you? Why or why not?

If a similar incident happened to me, I wouldn’t react much differently, as Angela’s response was appropriate and timely. The empathy and comfort she offered was key to supporting the student at a vulnerable time. However, I might consider involving a school counselor or other professionals who can provide deeper and ongoing support to the student, especially if the outside bullying continues.
