The convent was founded on June 28, 1426. Nuns lived in the convent until March 1809. They left because that is when Napoleonic troops arrived in Trujillo. It was originally used as a convent for the Third Regular Franciscan Order nuns. It is named La Coria because it was the starting point on the road to the city of Coria. The convent was abandoned during the War of Independence and was left in ruins until Xavier de Salas bought the convent to restore it. It is now a museum with a wide array of artifacts ranging from the original ruins to Iberio-American Crafts. It is also host to the Popular University, known as La Coria.

It is now a museum, school, and headquarters of the Xavier de Salas Foundation. Anyone can go there, the museum is open on weekends. In the museum, there is a permanent exhibit on Francisco Pizzaro, the conqueror of Peru because he was actually born in La Coria. This helps draw in some tourism because he is from Trujillo and is well known. It is also used for regional meetings, various research projects, and community events.

The space is very interactive. You are taken back through time when walking around. It is a restored 15th-century convent with original, Gothic architecture. The reason it was Gothic was to flaunt the wealth of the Catholic Church. Even though it is not entirely the original building, you are still taken back in time when walking through it.

The Convent was left to ruins during the Peninsular War, 1808-1814. Luckily, due to Trujillo’s isolation, a lot of the larger destroyed pieces remained close to their original location. This was very beneficial during the reconstruction because that means they did not have to add many modern elements to the reconstruction.
