I think students violate most is number 8, “Thou shalt not appropriate other people’s intellectual output.” This means that you should not be using words that were found on the internet from other individuals, as your own words. Many students think that simply rewording something ever so slightly is avoiding the violation of this rule.

I think that these violations occur because many students do not give proper credit to the original source of those words. Some students even pretend that the words and information that they have written were theirs and that is plagiarism; illegal.

In order to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior, one must first understand exactly what plagiarism is. Then they must learn how to properly quote and paraphrase the information that they wish to use without copying it exactly and using it as their own words. One must learn how to properly cite the source used and even, if possible, use a plagiarism checker to see what improvements they can make on properly citing information they use from another source.
