Miss Clairol 1956 "Does she, or doesn't she?"

"Does she, or doesn't she?"

Miss Clairol challenged the social norms of women dying their hair at home by convincing the consumer that they can still have perfect hair and do it at home and be discreet about it. That is right now every woman can do their hair in the comfort of their own home. Clairol uses a storytelling strategy in the "does she or doesn't she" campaign by having the mother and the child share the same hair color. Noone would ever know her secret, only her hair dresser.

Nice 'n Easy 1965 "The closer he gets the better you look"

"The closer he gets the better you look"

The 1965 campaign is fresh with the idea of sex appeal to drive the advertisement, it shows how men like it when their women have nicely colored hair that keeps them looking young and healthy. It is "Nice 'n Easy" to look like you have naturally healthy hair. Emotional appeal takes part in this by saying "The closer he gets the better you look" so the women how confident and appealing they can really be.

“Color As Real As You Are” ad campaign with Tracey Norman 2016

“Color As Real As You Are”

Real is Nice 'N Easy now in 2016! Clairol touches the heart of their loyal costumers. This celebrity model is now open about her being transgender and is authentic by still using the brand today as she once modeled for them in the past when she kept her sexual identity hidden. Good job to Clairol to keeping up with the times! This shows true genuine character for their brand and “Color As Real As You Are” is the best way to explain that.

"It's So Me" 2023

"It's so me"

Now in today's society, women color their hair no matter if it is necessarily natural but if it is their way of expressing themselves by dying their hair a color that is so them. It is no longer about the hair color you are born with or what your child's hair color is it is all about you, not what some guy thinks this is 2023! The strategy here is how easy and fun the product is and how great it would look on you not caring what anyone thinks of it. This is impressive Clairol look how far you have come, now I want to dye my hair pink!

"It lets me be me"

"It lets me be me" is much different from the other campaigns that Clairol has done in the past. The slogan suggests a more playful and being true to yourself and embracing that. In addition to that sex appeal still plays a part in this advertisement because of the male who is attracted to the women is also suggesting they are attracted to them because of her youthful fun hair that is all about her.

"Indulge" campaign 2008

"Indulge"

Many years later Clairol came out with "Indulge" which strays away from the idea of a male presence and even being discreet about having a different hair color although being natural is still very important. The advertisement is more edgy instead of lighthearted. The messaging strategy is more of a convincing informative advertisement telling women they should be coloring their hair with this product because it makes your hair look healthier and you can have a different color hair. After all, they have lots of different shades to choose from!
