While this article is an opinion piece portraying racial inequity in St. Louis, it uses factual evidence to support the point being made. One example would be the inclusion of the the water fountain lead test results. This showed without a doubt that the poorer schools, more highly populated with colored children, were continually exposed to far more harmful water than their richer, whiter counterparts. Additionally, exposing the way that fundraising for the different schools is done not only shows the truth, but also serves to convince the reader of purposeful inequality.

The two traditional news stories are the fundraiser for Reed Elementary school and the lead poisoning in St Lewis school. The way the writer tied these story to his opinion is by saying in one rich community, they are fundrasing for news building that are already in good condition, and a town over a school has caution tape around their water fountains.

Throughout the article numbers and percentages are given to the reader to defend the authors opinion. Another technique is through appealing to human nature. The author mentions poor children with no shoes and run down schools with lead-filled water. This creates a feeling of sadness for the reader and defends the authors opinion.

The first way the author uses elements of traditional news stories in this opinion piece was they had lots of facts about the topic. Although the article was filled with the authors personal opinion, many facts about the situation were present. The second element the author included was quotes from interviews with people about the water situation. She not only pulled information shot the topic from reliable sources, but also set up interviews and gathered people's opinions.
