However many consider the Cambodian genocide as an “auto-genocide” since there wasn’t one specific group targeted, but rather all of their society. The CPK (Khmer Rouge Regime) got rid of anyone who was higher class then them and any one lower class then them, they didn’t classes in their society. They basically wanted everyone to be at their “level”.

Many people were living in miserable conditions, they were forced to labor like if they were slaves. They didn’t have much freedom because they were being controlled and they weren’t really cared for, like they rarely had food, their health and education didn’t matter, and family life was rarely existence. Many either died of execution, starvation , disease, or from over-working. The CPK got rid of money, free market, normal schooling, and private property. They also abolished religious practices and traditions; culture. They would shut down schools, mosques, churches, and universities and then turn them into stables and camps. No one could meet together to have discussions.

As the Vietnam War made its way into Cambodia, the U.S used the country to regroup their troops. However the U.S has also bombed some parts of Cambodia due to suspicion of Viet Cong targets. In the 1970’s, Marshal Lon Nol decided to lead a military coup to take Prince Sihanouk down as the monarch of Cambodia. Sihanouk teamed up with the Khmer Rouge and they began to beat Lon Nol’s forces. However on April 17, 1975, The Khmer Rouge gained control of the government and started to put people of Phnom Penh into labor camps almost immediately. They began establishing their totalitarian state. Some interns tried to tell other nations what was happening but Cambodia never got allies.

I believe that the killings in the Cambodian genocide do match the UN definition of genocide. I say this because in the genocide, people were forced into doing labor and if they weren’t able-bodied enough to do the work, they would be killed. As defined by the UN, Deliberately inflicting the conditions of life to the point where people are dying, its a genocide. The Khmer Rouge also would cut off supplies like medicine, food, and clean water to Cambodians which caused them to die of disease and starvation. This is also considered an act of genocide by the UN.
