The key is "interacting" and not just passively taking notes. For middle school science teachers, I highly recommend "Teaching Science with Interactive Notebooks" by Kellie Macarelli. I can use the INB (Can we please start calling them IANs? InterActive Notebooks?) to help my students get read for their final writing prompts for each unit. They will be able to format their notes in a way that will create an essay in bits an pieces. All they should need to do will add transitions and conclusions. 
Also, these would be good preparation for their Unit 5 Dramatic Presentations, because they are similar to the dramatic notebooks that are a part of the assignment. 
This will support college readiness skills because of the tech aspect, as well as creating a project that can be used as a whole year assignment.
