Hugh Jackman starred in it along side Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya. P.T. Barnum's story inspired Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon to write this creation. 

During the late 19th century, Barnum had a circus with his troupe's to perform. 
During a flashback of his childhood where he and his father warked for the Hallett family as tailor's.  Phineas becomes attracted to Charity and makes her laugh. Even though Charity is sent away for school, Barnum keeps informing that they will not torn apart.  The pair keep contact by sending letters to one another. They eventually marry each other and then have two daughters, Helen and Caroline, in New York. Their life is humble but Barnum just wants more.
Phineas Barnum loses his job at a shipping company since the company loses all of it's money. With a daring risk, he takes out a huge loan to buy a Museum in the city. The sales are slow. His children suggest about getting something alive in the museum and that is when Barnum goes and looks for "freaks" to perform at his museum. This becomes a success, bring large audiences which then becomes a Circus. 
Barnum looks for other ways to give him a good popularity among people of the upper class, Barnum meets Phillip Carlyle who he convinces to join him. Phillip falls in love with Anne Wheeler, an african american trapeze artist but he hides his feelings towards her. In a trip, he manages to get Barnum to meet Queen Victoria then later meets Jenny Lind who is a famous Swedish singer who Barnum then convinces her to perform in America with him being her manager. Jenny's first performance is a massive success. Aristocats give Barnum a lot of credit but that makes Barnum distance himself from his original troupe. With his group feeling rejected, they go outside to stand agaisnt their local harassers who tell them to stay hidden. 
Anne and Phillip go to the theatre together. However, they run into Carlyle's parents who make racist comments towards Anne which causes her to run off while Phillip says how disgusted he is about his parents and chases after her. Phillip tries to convince Anne that they can be together, but, Anne rejects the idea despite her feelings for Phillip. While Barnum takes Jenny on the tour, Charity feels alone from her husband as she stays at home with their two daughters. Jenny begins to fall in love with Barnum but he refuses her which she then quits after giving him a kiss at the end of the last show which was photographed. 
Phineas returns back home to find his circus on fire which was caused by a fight from the troupe of herformers and the protesters. Phillip runs into the building since he believes Anne is still inside and is rescued by Barnum amongst the chaos. The "scandal" is printed on news papers so Charity takes Helend and Caroline to her parents' home. 
Barnum becomes depressed since he loses everything so he goes drinking at a local bar. His troupe find him and explain that they are disappointed but they still consider him as family and that they need him. Inspired, Barnum becomes ambitious and goes to bring his family back while Anne stays in hospital to be there for when Phillip wakes up in the hospital bed. 
With financial struggles of rebuilding the circus, Carlyle offers to use the earnings he got from his share every week to rebuild it on the condition of becoming a full partner. Barnum greatly accepts. Rebuilding the circus would be too expensive so Barnum transforms it into an open-air circus near the docks. Barnum is about Phineas T. Barnum as he's looking back on his life, starting when he is just a littleboy. The movie shows how he lived his life and he become successful circus-master. In the song "This is me", there a few quotes that inform you on some of the themes that are in the film.  “Hide away”, they say “‘Cause we don’t want your broken parts" (…) “Run away”, they say
 “No one’ll love you as you are” 
This song delivers a powerful mesage to everyone who can relate with trying to fit in from many aspects of anyone's life or appearance. The group known as "freaks" throughout the show the world that they have worth and that they can be loved. It shows that we should celebrate diversity without shame.
The realization of dreams is another theme in this movie. At the beginning of the film, Barnum is poor and is looked down upon by the father of the girl he falls in love with. He tries getting money out of boring jobs and offers his wife the life he promised her back in their younger days. Barnum takes a risk to create a museum he has been dreaming of, with the ideas from his daughters, he turns it into a circus. He goes through many difficulties, he manages to get people to like the shows he had on at the circus by the end of the movie. His story teaches us that we are not defined by who we are or where we was born. 
Barnum has a quest for fame and approval. He had always been overlooks by society and felt a need to prove  his wife's father wrong. In 2011, around 52,000 people worked in performing arts and in 2017 it jumped up to 76,000 people.

Funding seems to not be an issue. There are several trust funds for performers like Equity. They can offer financial support for people who are considering a career change because of debt or benefits advice. This company only helps actors and performers but excludes amateur performers, drama students and musicians. 

The number of students who study pperforming arts at A level fell with a 15.3% drop. This seem to be happening in Northen Ireland as well since they've had a decrease of 14%. Studies also have shown that 8,578 females are studying performing while only 3,795 males are. He was nominated for a tony award when he was working on light for "Barnum". 
When he was off Broadway, Miller worked in the Manhattan Theatre Club. So, my job as a lighting designer is to look into the kind of lights I may want and what I would want to do with them in the performance. 

Fresnel: This type of lighting is a soft-edged spotlight with control over beam angle than flood lights but it has less control than profiles. 
The lens is a series of concentric circles on the front and then it's pebbled on the back. This light is named after its French inventor, Augustin-Jean Frensnel who was born in 1788 and died in 1827. He developed the lens for French Lighthouses so that sailors could see them from further out at sea which meant that they could achieve a longer focal length with less glass. In the 1920s it was first used for stage lighting. 
The size of the beam can be adjusted by moving the reflector closer to or frrom the lens and the lamp, either by a screw mechanism or a simple slide. The beam can also be shaped by the four barndoors attached to the front of the lantern. 

Parcan: This kind of lantern came into use in the 1960s and was produced in the UK for the Rock and Roll industry. It quikcly found a favour since it was cheap and light and was easy to focus. The lamp is a sealed beam unit which has the reflector, lamp and lens all in one. Since the light can be produced intense, Parcans are suited to strong colours for special effect. However, the colours can burn out quickly at the lights full intensity. 
The beam produced by Parcan is a projection. The bean is a polarized because of the shape and can be rotated by rotating the lamp. You can access the lamp to the back of the lantern. 
It isn't widely used. They're not as effective at cutting off the beam that they are on the Fresnel but can still help tidy the edge of it's beam. Parcans are not great for general wash lighting unless it is for music where the amount of light is not a problem. 
I could use the parcan lights for the sequencing when the beat got faster since it would make the stage more lively and it would make everything stand out. Using coloured gel lens means that can be different colours going on and off for the majority of the dancing in the areas of the song I would select. Then, I could just put them all on at once so the stage would be colourful but that means the Frensel lights might be needed as much since they are better for light washing the stage.

I found out that the Parcan and Fresnel would work for the show and that the Scunthorpe Baths would have them. This means that we can use bright and bold colours like Craig Miller used in a lot of his work so that means that with the colours and the sequences I could bring the performance to life with the dancers. 
However, for the actors like myself, I could use the Fresnel lanterns for a white wash so the whole stage would be available to see for the whole audience and if they wanted a black out then it would be so simple to do that. This week we have found out that our theme of the show is The Greatest Showman. We also have been asked to choose a production role and to choose between being an actor and a dancer. I have chosen to design the lighting for the dancer's in the song "From Now Now" since I have had to do work which was previously about the different kind of lights and I have used the lighting desk at the college I study at so, I think I have great knowledge that will help me design the lighting for the dance piece. 

What have you learnt this week?

This week I have learnt what the story of The Greatest Showman was about and the themes of the film. We also learned that the story of Barnum was named after him and there were musicals of his story.

Mr Barnum was a successful promoter after moving to the city of New York. Between the years of 1841 and 1868, Barnum ran a Museum which featured "General Tom Thumb", "Feejee Mermaid" and other characters. Phineas Barnum started traveling in 1871 which would later become to Barnum and Bailey Circus. After his career, Barnum died on April 7th, 1891, in Brideport, Connecticut. 
Barnum was a natural salesman, he would peddle sacks and cherry rum at the age of 12 to soldiers. Then he moved to New York  when he was a young man and tried to work in different businesses like running a boarding house and newspaper publishing. 
In the year of 1835, he paid for an elderly slave called Juice Heth. She claimed to be 161 years old and to be a former nurse for George Washington. Barnum moved her to the northeast region when he roughly made one thousand and five hundred dollars per week. 
1841, in lower Manhattan, P. T. Barnum bought Scudder's American Museum which he reopened it as Barnum's American Museum where he displayed people with different authenticity. In the following year, Barnum met a 4 year old named Charles Sherwood Stratton who was 25 inches tall and weighed only 15 pounds. Barnum then tried Charles to sing and dance and then called him "General Tom Thumb" the public. This made the Museum have a massive popularity of the exhibit which was lead onto a tour of Europe which included the ruling monarch of the time, Queen Victoria of the English Empire. Barnum's American Museum burned down in July 1865. However, the promoter soon re-opened another museum at a location near by but it was also destroyed by a fire in March 1868. 
James A. Bailey and James L. Hutchinson joined Barnum in 1881. Then in the next year, they introduced a new person to the exhibit called "Jumbo" who was 11 and a half inches and weighed around 6 and a half ton elephant from London in the Royal Zoological Society. Jumbo was a successful hit until 1885 when he died. 
Barnum did become famous for the weird and wacky things he had in his circus, one of his most successful ventures was promoting a Swedish opera singer named Jenny Lind during the early 1850's. 
His family life was not a happy one. One of his daughter's died in their childhood and his other daughter was dropped from his will for committing adultery. Since he had no children who were male, Barnum requested to a grandson as long as he agreed to use Barnum as his name. Charity Barnum died in the year of 1873. In the following year, Barnum took Nancy Fish the daughter of a British admirer for his second wife even if she was 24-years-old. 
Barnum's name has been linked with the circus. However, he did not in fact become a circus showman until he was over the age of 60 tears old. He did not invent a modern circus. Barnum capped his career in the circus by buying a six-and-a-half-ton elephant named Jumbo.

In my acting piece I played the role of Phineas Taylor Barnum from the movie The Greatest Showman. Two script writers (Ebony and Trin) were tasked to rewrite the scene before the song "From Now On." 

As an actor, I had learnt my lines throughout week 2 after Ebony and Trin with the help of Emily and Courteney changed lines when Leonie joined our group as another Albino character. However, I didn't feel confident in knowing my lines until the day of the performance since I continued going over my lines the night before and on the way to college, ready to jump straight into rehearsing the piece for our assignment. 

From my own personal opinion, our recording went amazing. I know people were worried that they would forget that one line that never stick in their head but they didn't forget it for the recording.  People also moved when it was their turn. Courteney, our director, had made notes on how to say certain lines or to do a certain action. 

If I could have changed anything from our performance or rehearsals, I would ask people to come in when they were even feeling a little unwell since we didn't have many rehearsal sessions since people were missing for most of those times free.
